Heh, the "haiku" isn't even a haiku. Never heard of one that uses a 6/9/7 form anyway Wink

Worst thing I've seen anime fans do at a con is encourage species of the male population to attend YaoiCon, since YaoiCon apparently seems to be attended by "girls getting horny watching porn all day". Thus members of the male population are 'guaranteed to get laid' by attending YaoiCon.

as horrible as it sounds, this sort of makes sense.

Also, you didn't read a "news article", you read something on some terrible forum or blog site written by an idiot.

This right here is why your column is awesome.

I had to look twice to make sure that the "george bush does not care about animated people" comment wasn't the flake of the week. Seriously, does somebody really think that your least favorite politican (whoever that may be) is someday going to haul you off to jail should you pop in a Naruto DVD? Some people will believe anything.

That being said, if Senator Clinton dresses up as Faye Valentine at the next debate, we'll all know what her position is on the issue and my vote will be certain.

Actually a lot of manga-ka in Japan do write political stuff. Kawaguchi Kaiji comes to mind, most of his works are based on touchy political lines. Its a pity that only one of his work has been adapted into an anime (Zipang - a Japanese submarine from the year 2003 goes back to 1944 just at the Battle of Midway - how more political can you get?) and almost none of his manga (except for Eagle) has been translated into English. Another one of his works was even more edgy - The Silent Service was a 32 volume long manga which has the premise of a Japanese Nuclear submarine declaring itself as an independent state in the middle of the Pacific!

And FMA is a spot on example for a series full of political overtones.

btw, those answers-fans have scarred me for life. I ain't ever going to attend a cosplaying fest EVER! Confused Wink

It's actually interesting and cool to see this week's theme because my Answerfan answer had to do with racism as well. I'll paste it here:

Quote:
The worst thing I've seen somebody do at an anime convention was a blatant act of racism.

It was at a Fanime, in 2000 I believe. We were in the convention center area, near where the entrance to the masquerade usually was. It so happened that at the same time, there was a Muslim-oriented convention going on, so during certain parts of the day there would be many people from that convention sharing areas with Fanime - many of whom were in traditional clothing. There were a number of audible groans from the milling anime fans, and one girl said something like "This is an anime convention, not a towelhead convention!" loudly enough for everybody to hear. Not everybody laughed or reacted to what was going on, but that it was more than one person was enough for me. I was mortified.

I like to think that anime fans in general are fairly open-minded when it comes to a lot of things. They're usually the ones mentioning (though only partially true) Japan's somewhat more open policies toward homosexuality and toward what kind of material their children are exposed to, yet here in the thick of a group of fans, there were racist jokes being made.

I realize that those people didn't reflect upon the fandom as a whole, nor am I concerned that those being yelled at thought so, but it's still by far the most insensitive thing I've ever seen people do at an anime event.

As for the worst anime I've ever seen...I'm fairly forgiving of a lot so I can at the very least deal with most of what I've seen, but the worst I can think of off the top of my head is Debutante Detective Corps. To think that Akiyuki Shinbo, the awesome director of Moon Phase and Petite Cossette, directed that...thing...puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Eeehooohoo...some of those con/club horror stories made me queasy. I think I would be scarred for life after such experiences.

I enjoyed this week's installment. Very Happy

Now I'm not a very social guy and probably would not have attended an anime con anyway if one were to be held in my country, but reading those extracts has reinforced my belief that they are just not for me.

And this is why I don't go to cons...

Now, about that "answerfans" question... hm... that'll be tough... I'm pretty good at avoiding series I know I wouldn't enjoy, so I'll have to think pretty hard... I'm sure I can come up with something...

That's actually not quite the case, surprisingly. I know, you would think that, considering that art often reflects life, a country that actually has many mainstream media properties (not even necessarily anime and manga) that positively depict homosexuality (or sexuality in general) and such would be more open to it, but it's not really. Japan's stance towards homosexuality and other sodomic relationships may actually be less progressive than the United States'. At any rate, gays can get legally married in some places in the West; it is not so in Japan.

Also, concerning general open-mindedness, I would be very hesitant to say that Japan is any better than the West. Japan's population is very homogeneous, and there is often prejudice against other East Asians or gaijin in general-- it is not unheard of for skilled gaijin to have more difficulty in procuring better jobs, simply because they are "outsiders".

Oh believe me, I know that. Japan, like most countries, has a lot to sort out with regards to those issues. My point was that accurate or not, it's something that anime fans like to throw around with regards to being open-minded, yet they were being so close-minded that very moment.
