One year of prison time is probably preferable to being sued for tens of thousands of dollars, as the RIAA, MPAA and other organizations would do. A suspended sentence is a much better way of going about this than ruining someone financially over downloading one song, for example.


Have you ever been in prison? I don't know about the ones in Japan but it's not nice here in the US, most people would not choose it if given the choice.
