Don't you think that rather than having a preference for a certain breast size it's more to do with both the characters physique aswell as their personality. I don't tend to mind what size boobs characters have in anime as long as they are not massively huge and unsightly. Some people like big boobs fair enough but I don't have any particular preference. Like the male I am, I will sit there sometimes and think "maybe she would look better with bigger boobs" but generally I don't care.
I like all types of boobs really except for the obvious and deformed behemoth types but really the boobs will always be more attractive if it is a character you enjoy watching in the first place. Basically boobs are complicated things. Boobs in anime are mostly in my experience used as quite a big indication or metaphor if you will for their owners personality. Generally I think small boobs are used to represent a character with profound insecurities or who is tsundere in nature. They represent characters that have a certain amount of fragility. They are used to make the character appear cuter as well in many cases. Take Taiga aisaka, index and Louise the zero. They are short, have small boobs and have underlying insecurities. I didn't immediately think that taiga wasn't a desirable character because she had small boobs but interestingly enough one of the episodes touched upon a "what if" scenario involving breast pads. I won't try and deny it, I was thinking "thats an interesting image, might it be that bigger is better"? Maybe this shows that I naturally prefer bigger boobs and that I'm just in denial? Of course whilst characters such as Margery from Shana, oriana thomson from Index and urd from Ah my goddess represent the other end of the spectrum, there are also plenty of exceptions to this. The common use for big boobs on less headstrong characters is to represent air head type characters and characters too selfless to realise thier "advantage". Because this always winds me up...... One thing that I will never understand is the association that small boobs on small characters or loli's is instantly repulsive because you believe it is there for the sexualisation of young girls. I can understand people saying this in certain select cases but saying that you believe in this which ever way you look at it, is basically condemning a large number of people to be labled as undesirable perverts or worse. I think liking loli characters (for some males) or characters like louise and Taiga is more to do with the fact that some males might actually like the idea that their girl friend is small, insecure, cute and fragile and will need to rely upon him alot. This is kind of like the idea that oreimo explored with Kirino. Small breasts are seen as cute and so is being short in general terms. Any way I think it's very obvious that probably 98% of people who like small breasts or loli's are not predatory pedophiles. it's just one of those sligtly grey areas that with a little thought would be understandable to everyone as just "one of those things". I think the whole Loli=peodo argument is a joke really. Getting back on topic, if it suits the rest of the character design/personality then I like big ish boobs sometimes but I'm not too bothered really. At the end of the day I tend to either like a character design or not like it. Changing some thing that I already like by giving it bigger boobs isn't really something I think about alot. Basically big boobs are nice if in preportion but if it isn't broke to start with why try fixing it. Having said all this I do think mikoto misaka might benefit from a bit of a bust up out of curiosity. I'm doing a sketch of her later anyway as some bastard raided my sketch book and purchased all my index pictures and now it's just touma left so I'll try it later and see how it works out. 
I feel slightly embarresed now writing such a long post about "boobs". I thought I left this stuff behind at the pub

Interesting topic. I don't know if its the fault of fans that most small breasted, but still sexualized, anime characters are loli. But on the issue as a whole, I think you have to exaggerate features in anime. Just look at eye size for example. Hell "average" in anime would probably be big if the same proportions were kept in live action, anime big would be huge and anime huge would be grotesque. I think because the the androgynous nature of many anime faces body shape and thus breast size becomes a key part of distinguishing characters and making females feminine.

Thus begins the age old debate of Form Vs. Function. An interesting part of being a single father is that I end up having to field questions that I would have normally left to the Mrs. One of those questions is, "Why does character X have such ridiculously huge boobs?" My answer was, in short, that biology is playing a mean spirited practical joke on women. Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal says it better than I ever could.

I honestly don't know why I read through this thread. Perhaps a perverse fascination to see what might be posted on here.
As for me, I'm interested in the story, ideas and characters of a show. And, in the case of anime, the animation quality itself. I don't usually care how female character models are drawn, but I have two exceptions to this. The first is characters that are young in appearance that are blatantly sexualised. I don't care how old a show says they are, if a character looks like a child but I'm told they're an adult, it's still a drawing of a child to my eyes. My other exception is female characters that look like they would be crippled by back pain if they were real, either, and usually wear too little clothing to boot. Either extreme is usually a good indication that I'm watching a show which makes up for it's lack of artistic or storytelling merit by feeding otaku desire to watch softcore porn. |

You seem to have a misconception here. Breasts are attractive not because they signal the health of a potential mate. The evolution of breasts occurred because they emulate buttocks, which is the primary female attractor among primates. In the process of moving to an upright posture, the human vagina moved forward to a position that allowed frontal sex. So the enhanced breasts became a natural selection factor. That's your lesson for today. |

My observation is that the word "perverted" as used in anime simply means sexually aroused or even just sexually aware. Not abnormal but perhaps undesirable. For example a girl will often shout "ecchi" (most often translated as "pervert") at a guy who saw her panties because the wind blew them up. Or to repulse advances. I don't see how that usage can convey the meaning "abnormal." |

In any case, I can imagine Harunobu in Genshiken delivering a disquisition on how animated breasts are more functional and psychologically pregnant than the real thing because of their abstraction.

im a guy and i hate large breast in anime especially like those in "sacred blacksmith" it actually ruined that whole show for me, i could really do without big breast, in fact i wish i never had to see big breast in anime again
small breast to medium realistic size please |

Second that. I have started threads here on that subject before, where an anime that otherwise might be interesting is ruined by the artists catering to some demographic that think breasts that are 1/3 the woman's body mass or bigger is sexy. Divergence Eve is the worst example I can think of. |
