I'm sorry to hear that.

You seem to be talking about muggings more than just robberies. Am I correct?
omar235 wrote: | Did you anyone you know try to catch the robber. |
No, they almost always happened when nobody was home. Just last summer my Aunt came home to a looted house. I had given her a DVD player that was stolen so I replaced it with another.

I worked in retail myself for a few years and people were stealing from us every single day of the week; everything from a single bargain bin CD to a whole tractor-trailer's worth of electronics in one go. Everyone from baggy-pants gang bangers to well-groomed adults in suits and even parent-offspring duos. Once or twice a week they'd get caught and would be confronted at the exit. Not once did anyone bust out a knife or gun. The most they ever did was shove, punch, or kick and even that was fairly rare. Having read about and visited Japan it would seem it's even more unlikely to happen there than here. Thus, we have the surprise reaction by the Japanese media.

Amazing...What's the world coming to? That kid's fandom is beyond comprehension, to stab a guard for getting caught doing such an immoral and degrading crime is just sad. More negative publicity for anime, thanks kid.
If he was poor, couldn't he have just gone to a public library [if they had any] in Japan?
Although, I do feel bad for him to a certain level. And of course, the guard especially.

I told my teen about this & she was also blown away--she couldn't think of any friends who would knife someone shoplifting.
I worked at Montgomery Ward way back when & our security regularly came in talking about shoplifters & non ever seemed armed. The usual njuries were from the shoplifter fighting back, throwing the thing they stole or stuff from the store. One time the guard hurt his ankle chasing someone across the freeway overramp.
Shoplifters aren't usually armed. That's for people stealing money or jewelry.
Now street people-that's a different matter. They come into the office with knives all the time because they forget they aren't supposed to be carrying weapons as convicted felons, but they apparently need them for street life. If they're smart they stash them first so they won't get busted along with losing their knife.

That's no good. What if you have two incredibly stupid criminal acts in one month but then the next month is virtually free of illicit hilarity? |
Well, the award could be given retroactively but have you ever had a month go by without hearing about an idiot trying to commit a crime and failing miserably and with occasional spectacular results?

Well I actually googled it, it said that it was only robberies that it covered, it seemed like a reliable source, to tell you the truth I was a bit surprised by the percent they gave for robberies involving knives which was 8.9% which seems way too low.

There are plenty of things that are bad but funny. This isnt one of em though. Not because its so bad or anything. Really it isnt THAT bad. Its because it just isnt all that funny. There are funnier stuff than this.

hmm.. well lets see. It would've been funnier if it had happened in the United States. Then it would've been a slightly overweight 14 year old that ran out of cash because he just spent his allowance on his ddr addiction. So he walks into the local Walden Books armed with a spork he stole from the food court, just in case things get a little heavy. He proceeds to "lift" 5 volumes of Death Note but unfortunately is apprehended by mall security when he sets off the alarms. He engages the mall security guard with his heavy duty KFC spork. The mall security guard returns the favor with a little "Mace in the Face" . The mall security guard ends up loosing his job for not using the appropriate level of force and the 14 year old boy is charged as an adult for theft and assaulting a uniformed law enforcement officer. THAT would be funny.

Prisoner#1: "I'm in for Armed Robbery of a bank, taking Hostages, and shooting it out with the police. You?"
Prisoner Otaku: "I stole $50 worth of manga."
Prisoner #1: "...I'm gonna raep you now."
Too bad this didn't happen in the USA, since the above would've been painfully relevant.

First case of stealing manga you've ever heard of? Dude, talk to dealers at a con, there's a reason so many vendors are using CCTVs at cons.

What I should've said is this is the first documented case I've ever heard of, I work in retail, we get hit all the time, we find shrink, it's not surprising.

I wok at a library, and cds and dvds tend to get stolen, especially the Hindi dvds. But we've never had anyone stabbed.

I could only wish that it was shrink wrap that I find at my work. I can't tell you how much fun it is for our engineers to snake out the toilets only to find that what was plugging it were fistfull of price and sensor tags. They just looove that! So do the women who tried to use that particular toilet, not knowing that that stuff was in there.

Someone once phoned in a bomb threat to my high school. Instead of escorting us off campus, they put eveyone in the cafeteria. I suppose no one realized this made us an easier target. But hey, thats public eduction for you.
