Here is what this thread is not about: recent crimes in America, including this weekend's tragic killing spree.

Please keep it on topic to the news item.

This is quite terrifying; I can't imagine how demoralizing it must be for the performers when a fan attacks like this.

It reminds me much of how former Pantera guitarist Darrell Abbott was shot and killed on stage during a show with his last band, Damageplan in 2004.

Let's not subscribe to the logical fallacy that just because some AKB fans are morons that all AKB fans are morons. Please.

Obviously he's not getting a sword (which are heavily regulated by laws and costs thousands to tens of thousands of dollars and have to be polished constantly to remain in a usable state) past security, and the difference between a decent-sized knife and a folding saw is that you can buy a saw in any Japanese hardware store (in the gardening tools section), and those things are VICIOUS.

Because you know... Americans attack their pop stars with saws all the time....

Sarcasm noted. Of course they don't; the producers of American pop stars have the common sense to:

1. Not pander to filthy kimotaku with their music, anti-romance rules, and schoolgirl fantasy costumes.

2. Keep the fans a respectable, safe distance from the pop stars.

3. Protect said pop stars with professional, armed bodyguards.

4. Use metal detectors on every single person entering a concert venue.

My point was that if AKB used the same marketing techniques ("idols you can meet") with the same lax security measures in America, someone with an AR15 would have killed 80% of Team A, K, or B by now.

Did you know the US Open has police snipers in the grandstands? American event security does not mess around.

Not deranged Americans, deranged idol/AKB fans.

AKB was designed to appeal to a certain kind of person, and it caught up with them.

The only difference is that this guy would have had a 17-round Glock instead of a $7 saw had he been American.

More on that certain type of person... http://yonasu.com/akb48-fan-buys-5500-copies-of-new-single/

There's also far more money in appealing to the otaku market, due to the common man backing out of the music market to the degree that the top sellers are no longer dictated by the average person.

Just heard this from NHK World this morning, I'll quote the article:

NHK World wrote:

Pop groups cancel events after attack on AKB48

Japan's top all-girl pop idol group AKB48 and its sister groups have canceled events following Sunday's assault on 2 of its members.

The 2 members of AKB48 and a male staff member were attacked by a 24-year-old man with a saw during a hand-shake event held in Takizawa City, Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan. The assailant was arrested on the spot.

The 2 teenage victims reportedly suffered bone fractures on their fingers as well as cuts on their heads and arms. They underwent surgery Sunday night, and left the hospital on Monday evening.

The group's management company on Monday announced on its blog it had cancelled AKB48 concert scheduled later in the day at the group's theater in Tokyo.

AKB sister group NMB48, based in Osaka, also postponed its concert planned Monday morning. The group's management posted a message on its homepage saying it had no choice but to postpone the event. It added the group's security procedures will be overhauled.

Another AKB48 fan event scheduled on Monday in Kanazawa City, along the Japan Sea coast, has also been postponed.

AKB48's management has organized various events, including hand-shakes, under the concept "Idols you can meet."

Yeah AKB48 and their management has cancelled upcoming events as a response to what happen to the 2 members.

I believe that you are misrepresenting, or perhaps just misunderstanding, some things that have been said in other threads.
I know that some people, including me, have said that maintaining a pure public image was part of the job, but I do not think that anybody ever said, or even implied, that allowing herself to be physically assaulted was part of an idols job.

What happened in this case was definitely not a part of any job, and I have not seen anybody here try to justify it.
Perhaps you are thinking of the comments on the Sankaku Complex page that was cited? People there are blaming the girls and saying that they should have expected it and calling them "prostitutes" and such. I have not seen that happening in these forums.

Sankaku Complex is a decent source for porn, but I would not go there for news.

And I wasn't saying, or implying, that some of the forum members think that idols should allow themselves to be physically assaulted. Look at my comment again, and what I was commenting about --- the article that Hoppy commented on was about how some of the otaku fan culture is 'facing a moral collapse', and referenced a number of lewd/perverted encounters idols were experiencing with fans. Hoppy's comment was that those idols should be allowed to slap the fans in those sorts of situations, and my tongue-in-cheek reply was that there are members on the forum who think that the idol's job is to cater to their fanbase regardless of their ridiculously unreasonable expectations. Obviously, you draw the line much closer to the side of the fans, since you think that idols should kowtow to the expectation that they "remain pure" and not have relationships outside of their work. I personally think that's unreasonable and disgusting, and that it's part of the twisted sort of mindset that factors into the nasty behavior idols seem to be facing from the fandom. Whether it factored into this particular incident doesn't seem to be clear atm (though the fact that the culprit was unemployed with shut-in tendencies seems suggestive), but all the same, it does seem like some of the idol fandom are taking things way too far because of the gross mindsets they're adopting.

No, but to get into one of these handshake events you have to spend the equivalent of several hundreds of dollars on buying multiple copies of the same CD. I've heard even thousands of dollars. So you're basically going to be getting only the most fanatical of fans at these events and yes, a lot of these guys are going to be mentally unbalanced.

Japan's music market is no more about how many fans ya average but how many average CDs per fan could be induced.

The agency management failed these girls. Those bosses command these girls as workers yet didn't provide enough safeguards in their workplace.
