not sure why. But they aren't cute. |
Looking at their faces you'd almost think that if you a threw a rock at them, it'd just sink right into the skin and vanish... |
To be fair the character designs used in the anime are the fault of Kyoto Animation, and not the mangaka. The manga doesn't have that same moe blob look that K-on and the second season of Haruhi had.

Let's count the songs from the first season:
Cagayake Girls
Don't Say Lazy
Fuwa Fuwa Time
My Love is a Stapler
Fude Pen Booru Pen
Let's count the songs from the second season:
Go Go Maniac!
Listen!
Pure Pure Heart
Utauyo Miracle
No, Thank You!
U&I
Gohan wa Okazu
Tenshi ni Fureta yo
And then there's the Death Devil songs as well...
And that's only in the anime. There's also two different character songs and image songs for each character, and not to mention more songs that I don't think made it to the anime (like Curry Nochi Rice).

I wonder if the new K-ON! installments will be used as a vehicle to tell what the movie will be about.

I was talking about music in the anime itself. From what I recall, the only songs that were played, even for a minute, was "Fuwa Fuwa Time", "Curry Nochi Rice", "Brush and Ballpoint Pen" and "My Love is a Stapler". Season 2 only had a hawaii version of "brush and ballpoint pen","Pure Pure Heart", "U&I", "Gohan wa Okazu" and "Tenshi ni Futari yo". That's it.

So if we take your list, which would be 8 songs for 40 episodes.
Or 1 song every 5 episodes.
So your estimate needed to be cut in half
However, the OPs and EDs were a HUGE reason to the success of the show. So to discount them would be, in my opinion, extremely stupid.
Counting OPs and EDs, there would be 14 songs for 40 episodes, or about 1 song every 3 episodes.
And then you have to consider all the character albums, etc. Not to mention the "live event" held in the Yokohama Arena which was at max capacity (15,000+) for the musical experience. And then you factor in that the seiyuu for each character actually learned to play the respective instrument of the character they voice (with only Mugi having prior skill on the piano and having right-handed Youko Hikasa learning to play left-handed bass) and actually performing live on stage two of the HTT songs...
Yeah, buddy. There could have been more music in the series, no doubt. But there is no doubt whatsoever that one of the prime factors to the show's success was its music.

And that's still more songs than what they were shown playing in the manga.
(Also, season 2 had a Death Devil performance as well.)

<3 Megiddo.
I don't mind if Kakifly beats this cash cow to death-- in fact, please do. I wonder where it will pick up from, or what it would even be about. The girls in college, or Azunyan and the new Light Music Club?
Regardless, I am ecstatic. Hooray~~
