I'm a diehard fan and 1000% sold out to anything GITS I've ever watched before... but what tickles me the wrong way in this Arise is that the detail level on visage and overall production seems much less than SAC and much less than original movies.

I guess they did not put 450k each episode even in this legendary anime. I've come to expect only the very best Japan has to offer in Ghost in the Shell. =(

The first impression was not WOW... Mayaa Sakamoto, yeah, wow and character voice like usual but art style... nope. Get back to the original details and art. Crisp, fantastic, teknolyzed, innovative.

Edit: Seriously, the second time I watched it, it just jumped out of the screen that the artists don't know the hell they're doing about building GITS material. I got the blu-ray from japan for SSS and SAC, this is way under the level. The only way I'm gonna finish it is with the most amazing story of the decade and because of the voice actors... but it better not be a brutal let down because GITS is one of the holy grails of anime that you don't and cannot destroy for money because it has always been at the front as an icon for its genre.

Where are Mamoru Oishii and the original creators when we need them?! -_-

The original creator is making porn, because that's what he does.

I'm sold. It's a prequel so I can live with the new designs. I thought I pinged a bit of the Oshii movie in that as well, when we all know Oshii no original movie wasn't canon to the manga. Is it that this prequel isn't either?

Me too - as long as it comes out in English...

I was originally under the misconception that Arise was a prequel story, until karyuudo0127 pointed out that it was separate from the SAC universe. I don't have a problem with that, though, as SAC is separate from the movies (Ghost In The Shell and Innocence), which in themselves are separate from the manga. I'm still very interested to see how the story for Arise plays out and how the characters are developed. I'm sure general characteristics and concepts will remain the same, as they've carried across from the movies through the SAC series, but then to me, it wouldn't be GITS if they weren't. As for Arise, I like what I see and hear (music-wise) so far. As much as I'm slightly leaning toward preferring the re-fineness of the SAC character designs, I look at them as basically being more mature (older). As for Kusanagi, she's already shown that she can dive into any cyberised body she has access to, so age or voice of the body doesn't really matter.

Well, in one of the episodes of SAC, Motoko temporarily goes into one of the bodies she used when she was younger.
What? I don' t remember that. Was that in laughing Man, or Individual 11?

I'm wondering if SpacemanHardy was referring to episode twelve of SAC, where one of the Tachikomas decides to go off on its own for a while and is befriended by a little girl. Throughout that episode, a teen-aged girl watches them and if I recall correctly, it turns out to be spoiler[ the Major. There's also the little girl's body the Major ends up in at end of the original movie.]

Yup, it's been a while since I last saw it (probably AS/Toonami's last run) but pretty sure that's right. Smile

As to whether or not McGlynn would sound right for the new Motoko, I think she would (I'll admit I'm ofcourse biased since I'm with those who've said they'd love the SAC dub cast back since they are damn perfect for their characters), if necessary I'm sure she could tweak her voice a bit to go younger since she's seemingly hardly new to voice acting I imagine she's had to do this for other roles even if I can't think of any at the moment. Plus, if she tweaks it well, I don't think it would be much of an issue and maybe even less than usual since I think we're kind of used to her voice coming out of several different looks. Even if the Japanese cast has finally changed it's not like they casted specifically younger, so I think our excellent SAC dub cast would be up to the challenge since they've done such a good job on both SAC/SSS and the Innocence movie.

Is this in continuity with SAC? I seem to recall that Major didn't meet Saitou until she was in an adult body and in the military and that Togusa was still new to the unit when Major was in her adult body.

Nice to know World War IV was nuke free, at least. Especially after that terrible World War III, which apparently was fighting Black Adam.

Nope, Arise is in a new universe altogether. The whole production team sounded pretty worried when they were told that they were breaking off from SAC. I really do hope they go back to SAC in the future and add at least one more story to it.

I actually think it's a good thing this is it's own continuity so if it bombs Hey, at least it doesn't mess with SAC's canon.

I'm actually glad they rebooted the series (effectively). I love SAC, but it's very difficult for newcomers to get into a complex pre-existing story. Also, it makes things more difficult for a writer: everything new must be consistent with that which has come before (in addition to fulfilling other requirements). This effectively makes it much more difficult and time-consuming to write something of quality.

Finally, so much has happened in SAC: the average character in the series had more "adventure" than a typical human would have in 10 lifetimes. This is just musing, but I think such clutter may negatively affect immersion/believability.

By the way: I can't wait for the show! I love GITS (because it's well-written, intelligent, and it borders on the prophetic).
