I'm trying to sell off a few things in my collection, namely things I've realized are just taking up shelf space and that I am completely unlikely to watch again (time is becoming a precious commodity for me lately).
I wanted some advice on good places to sell items and get a reasonable return (say $5-6 for a $20 DVD, a bit more for a box). The obvious place of course is ebay, though I'm really unhappy with the number of bootlegs there and am boycotting until they have a stronger anti-bootleg policy. I can't in good conscience go put my totally legit anime up for sale next to pirated crap! All of my anime is open and used (though in relatively good condition). I have a few complete box sets as well. I was just wondering if anyone knew of some other places that would be a good place to sell? I've tried Gamestop, though they usually don't pay more than $1-3/DVD (if you're lucky), which is a little less than I'd like to part with things. In addition to this, they don't give you anything extra for the box set (which really sucks). I've also investigated uzed.com, but am not sure if they're all that legit (the prices on the site seem to fluctuate by a dollar if you move things from your cart to "save for later." That seems a little shady. However, their buy back prices are better than Gamestops, and if you trade in 16 DVDs worth $2 or more, you get free shipping + insurance. Has anybody ever used them before? Thanks for any help in advance. |

You'll get your best price if you avoid a middleman. A place like eBay is really the best place to do that. No stores are going to give you much because they want to re-sell it for a profit, and they have to keep quite a bit of stock on hand. To compensate for the stuff that may never sell at all, they can't pay out too much and still make a real profit.

There is a site called tradeup.com that will buy used dvd's. They are affilated with Suncoast, Sam Goody, and Media Play. They buy used dvd's. I haven't sold to them yet. Have bought from them though. Real Cheap.

No stores are going to give you alot of money for dvds and anime is diffenetly no exemption to this rule. I tried trading in a $100 star trek Season dvd they only wanted $15 dollars for it. For that kind of pricing I think I'll just keep it and eventually give it to someone as a present or something (I'd probably save more money giving it a present and not having to buy a present). But the best places to sell used items will always be online ebay type places.

I'm not disputing these points in any way, rather I'm asking if people know of good places, that unlike Ebay, have policies allowing people to only sell legit stuff, and back them up. Ebay *does* have such a policy (see here), but clearly it is unenforced... just check out auction listings for about any anime you can think of. There's pirated junk all over the place. I liken this to walking into your local anime shop and seeing bootlegs on the shelf next to legit releases, for half the price. I wouldn't shop at such a place, so why should I have to sell there? I have yet to truly run across a place to sell that has higher standards, and would like to know if anybody has. Maybe I'm being unreasonable, given the "free market" nature of Ebay (i.e. you must shop wisely), but I don't think I am... |

Hey shattercone i pm´d you so give me a reply.
Anyway I get rid of my crap, Anime DVDs that i thought sucked, to Gamestop for they sometimes give you more in-store credit than other places, specially when they have ¨trade in 4 or more used DVDs and get 40% extra¨ and if your a Gamestop/Game informer member you get an extra 10%. ends up about 7 or 8 per DVD and I always get store credit and buy used anime from their store with their popular ¨buy 2 get 1 free¨. Legend Of Kyoto for less than $50 which I used store credit on was a great deal for Gunparade March, Heatguy J ($20 3 DVDs at Best buy) and I also got vol.2 of Soul Taker that i needed to complete my collection. If you want to sell them to a retailer, go for the store credit. If not, swallow your pride and go ebay. I mean atleast you wont be the idiot buying bootlegs. |

Have you tried EB Games yet? I've seen most anime DVDs trade-in from around $1-7 depending on the series. Also, if I remember correctly, there's a trade-in promo where if you trade in 3 qualifying DVDs you get a bonus 25% trade-in credit per DVD. I think it runs until the end of the month (lol I work there, I should have these stupid promos memorized by now). It's worth a shot, yknow but keep in mind, that if you want cash, it'll be 20% less the total trade-in credit.
Also, if you have a LiveJournal account, I'd suggest advertisting at various anime-related communities and I'm sure you can find ones that are specifically for selling anime goods. Hope this helps! ^^ |

Unless you're despeate to unload your discs immideately for cash, I recommend listing them on some trading sites. The best place to trade anime DVDs in my experience is http://www.animeka.net . Other good places are www.ign.com Movies & Music classifieds forum, www.dvdtalk.com Exchange forum and www.gametz.com . All of these allow listing DVDs both for sale and for trade.

God I hate credit. I always believe if you pay for in cash you should get cash but that's my opinion. And I whole up darely with that opinion because the fact I move around alot and not everywhere I got there is a store from the last place I lived at. |

This is just the type of place I was looking for, I checked these sites out and they seem pretty good (and don't tolerate the selling of bootlegs). LxTrix and crion; for some reason, trading things never came on my radar, your suggestions put it on there. Thanks! To the ANN staff: I read it was considered a possibility to add a sell/trade section to the Retail Forum at some point. Is this still completely hypothetical or is it in the works? It'd make sense for readers in the ANN community to want to at least trade things, though I can imagine moderating such a forum could potentially be a serious nightmare! |

While trading might seem like a good idea, it wouldn't work simply for the fact that you have to trade at your own risk. If someone you were trading with just took your end of the trade and bail out, the mod and forum can't take responsiblity. Then you get tons of topic of people getting ripped off. I'm sure there are trustful people that want to trade away there stuff, but to regulate and run an efficient trading forum will require a lot of work. |

As far as trading ANYTHING online (I've mainly done only paintball guns and gear trading online), you should do it with someone you are pretty certain you can trust, and this most assuredly goes for anime dvds as well. If you're looking to sell via forums, the same thing applies.
The cool thing with forum based selling and trading is the one putting the item up for sale or trade has COMPLETE control over the sale until the other party has somehow provided compensation for the item, or the item has been shipped (whichever comes first). That means someone can make you an offer within your asking margins (or trading margins) and if you have reason to distrust them, you are perfectly within your rights as the seller to refuse to do business with that person. However, you need to be good at 'reading' people online and knowing where the best places to sell and trade at are. For me and my pball gear, I sell or trade ONLY on the smaller more tight-knit community forums because there everybody knows everybody and if a regular defaults on a trade or sell where they are the recipient of the goods, or cheats the buyer out of what was agreed, then their name is MUD on that forum and anywhere else those forum regulars visit, and they will almost garaunteed be unable to sell elsewhere online again because the forum regulars will essentially get them on the blacklist of most places (one guy's name is really gone downhill since he recieved several guns he was going to modify, and then he disappeared, has been unable to be contacted even in the real world, and has made off with several thousand dollars worth of other people's stuff). In the anime realm, I'm certain that there are good, small, trustworthy communities you can feel pretty safe selling or trading parts of your collection at. Just make sure that the folks you sell to or trade with are considered to be trustworthy by the community, and that furthermore that the community is trustworthy as well. If you want to go the safest route, though....go through trading sites or ebay. |

the other thing you could do is try posting on your local craigslist--you might be able to get a few dollars more that way and you would have to deal with the listing process/fees...just a thought.
