I've always thought the reason why there is so much more fan-related BL/yaoi material out there is because the primary fans of BL/yaoi are female and to me it seems that females are much more likely to make responses than males. Fanart, fanfiction, LJ postings... I'm under the impression that GENERALLY guys tend to build on things that already exist - if there's a huge collection of Shuffle! pics they'll utilize it in all their designs; but less often do I see male (or at least what seems to be male) members doing fanart.
I'm not saying none of them do it, I'm just saying less of them do compared to females (considerably less, even). That's how it appears to me.
Of the guys I know who do like relationship-based anime (some of them hate it) - including things like Air, not just shoujo sort of things - they all don't do fanart or fanfiction... they're more likely to participate in fansubbing, or in discussion on forums, create banners or at the most create a dedicated site to the anime. That's just my experience anyway.

My favorite ironic quality of the Yaoi phenomenon:
10 years ago: "Waah, how come there are no women at Anime cons? Boo hoo, I'm lonely, and the only fangirl here is already married!"
Today: "What's with all these scary women and their yaoi? That stuff is so gross! I don't want to watch two guys do that stuff!"
My second favorite: the fact that there has been far less of a fuss from the fan community over heterosexually-themed hentai, even though the content of that anime is far, far more disturbing than yaoi.

Lol, after reading all the posts in this topic, I feel an obligation to sit down and think up a good question.
The only suggestion I can make is if we want to read 'better' questions, then we ought to be writing better questions. Look if every person who posted just in this topic wrote a well thought out question, Zach would have material for weeks.
Just my two cents.

The question I wanna ask....well, they can't "reveal" their source of info.

There's more hentai anime than 18+ yaoi anime, so when you have a larger pool of material, the "poles" tend to be more extreme. But there is some 18+ yaoi that is just as bad as some of the worst hentai.
But also, in general, most hentai is not as "visible" as yaoi is. And by that I mean, even though everyone knows hentai exists, you don't hear too many people walking around anime conventions talking about how hot Night Shift Nurses 4 was the way you hear people talking about Level C, Ai no Kusabi, Boku no Sexual Harrasment, etc. And I've never heard someone call themself a hentai fanboy (or fangirl), the way yaoi fangirls (or fanboys) do.

As though anime doesn't already have a bad rep for being exclusively pornographic! May the worst lemonfics lay buried in the furthest depths of the internet....

No. What's it like? I should probably go check it out myself, but you make it sound scary....
Man, I sound really conservative here. Just want to mention that there's nothing wrong with creative freedom in writing. I always thought of places like fanfiction.net as being great places for people to practice writing short stories because they can get feedback on their work. And romantic sex scenes be they yaoi/het/yuri done tastefully can enhance a story.
But I guess if a story is written purely for the sex then it would be more like pornography? 0_o; I guess you can't tell people they aren't allowed to write that but it does have it's place....

i don't think anybody is knocking fanfiction.net. i like fanfiction.net. you get instant response from people who are interested in some of the same things you are. i'm just wondering what other peoples' reactions are when they come across a one-shot written by a 14 yr old girl where the focus is an explicit sex scene, whether it's yaoi or het.

The forums are made and run by users, in otherwords all those yaoi authors are making their own forums for a partcualr show.
For example, the third most popular Yu Yu hakusho forum is the "I like Boys with Other Boys" forum, and it's behidn two role playing forums.
It's yaoi fangirlism at it's worst.

I liked your column Zac. I feel like we should give you a medal of courage for continuing to plug away when you are faced with such mind-numbing questions.
The rant was weak. It lost fire before it was halfway through. And it seemed like the author was trying to dredge up feelings that were not their own.

I have nothing against Yaoi or Yuri, but i'm interested to yet see a story with realistic characters than the typical 'fan-service/game-type characters that follows the too often common character sterotype... i've outgrown the fanservice and just want to see a good plot with unique, likable characters
Or i'll just make my own... *plots*

It says no lemons but they really don't enforce it.

Hating forums relates to Hippocrates, how? I think you meant hypocritic(al).
Perhaps I'm just easily amused, but I still find the Answerman Column interesting and entertaining. And I would agree with the idea that if you want to see better columns, as defined by the will of the mob it seems, send him better questions. This is democracy, people, your questions actually mean something.

If you guys think that Fanfiction.net is scary for yaoi, you should see AdultFanfiction.net.

The whole fansub debate has been exhuasted.
The last thing people want to read is more awnsers to why fansubs are wrong etc etc.
This weeks Awnserman has hardly been stimulating.
I would like to see more out of the box questions i.e. change in people's buying habits, uniformity of character designs.
