I think this is a bit off, afaik shinigami (in any culture) do not care about faith (they do their job and that's it), which seems at odds with being X central concern, which makes one think that being x needs faithful prayers to exist/exert power. The other possibility is that prayer by the unfaithful/polluted is driving being X mad like a neurotoxic poison would do with a human. Looking forward how this keeps unraveling, so far the W.E. Coyote formula of every major plan blowing in Tanya's face keep being quite entertaining, it was delicious to see her face when her not very loved sidekick reappeared |

Yea, I knew she had been born in 1913 and I just figured that since it was 1924 that she was 11 now. But you're right her birthday could be at the tail end of the year and she could still be 10. The irony with Tanya is that if she acted a little more like a little girl, she probably would be sent some place safe away from the front lines. But her salaryman persona keeps making her look too smart and too effective for that to happen. |

EP 5,
This felt almost like a band of brothers episode heh, I love how she tries to fail them all but they get all inspired by how hard core she is and are now pretty much all willing to go through hell with her (which they no doubt will in the future). I did like the comparison to actual world war I where many countries were still using really outdated tactics from previous wars when the rise of the machine gun had already made them obsolete. Also the part where she used the really girly voice to send the warning to the enemy was hilarious, along with her Soldier's reactions, they don't even see her as a little girl anymore so hearing her talking like one really confused them heh. |

I agree it is not a flaw in this show, considering this is a world war, in which Tanya's nation is on the receiving end. Results are the only thing that matters. |

Tanya joking about visa's and her childish warning prior to the factory bombing were also pure gold in the comedy aspect for episode 5.
Also those planes in episode 6 seem to be loosely based on the huge framed German bombing planes during that time. |

I'd be curious for a specific example here, as all of the bombers from that era that I looked up were biplanes. These clearly weren't. |

As far as the bombers, they seem more like late 20s, early 30s standard models (could be early Tupolevs or Heinkels). All WWI bombers were multiwinged (usu. 2, but some experimental models had up to 6).
I would like to take issue with one of Theron's assertions, the Dakians are not WWII Poles, but WWI Rumanians (Dakia is the Greek version of the Latin Dacia (most of modern Rumania) and it is in pretty much the same place as Rumania on the map), even the uniforms are similar and, though abridged, the history is pretty dead on. The Entente egged on/bribed Rumania (which actually had a German royal family) to attack the Central Powers in 1916 when they were busy with Russian and Italian offensives. After some very small successes, FM von Mackensen pushed them into Besarabia (modern day Moldova) in probably the quickest campaign of WWI. They surrendered soon afterward and spent the rest of the war supplying the Germans and Austrians with what little food they did not have (by the end of the war it was in full on famine). That aside, I really love this series, I think of it as "Blackadder Goes Forth, The Anime". |

My question is which country is representing the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the show? I believe there has been mention of the Empire having allies, but I'm not sure they've been named yet. Unless the Empire is meant to be an amalgm of Germany and Austro-Hungary.

To me it looks like an enlarged single wing version of the German Gotha G.III (also adding rear engine gunners).
It may not be intending to represent any one historical plane but to show what might have been in use had WW1 not occurred until the 1920's. Edit: And seconds after posting that I found it, its the French Blériot 127/2, first prototype flight 1926, second up engined prototype flight 1928 then in service 1929-1934. 100% the same with the sole exception the plane had 3 gunners and one pilot (M4 or 4 man crew French military aviation classification) while the makers of Tanya have mistakenly made the single pilot seat have two abreast pilots. The plane was originally designed as a heavy fighter for bomber escort (the 360 degree gunner arcs) then adapted to light bomber/recon role. Apparently not very well liked by pilots for poor handling (and I would imagine poor forward vision too!). There were access tunnels to move between the gun positions in flight. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bleriot_127-2.JPG Last edited by WatcherZer on Sat Feb 11, 2017 11:50 pm; edited 4 times in total |

Based on the map in animenewsnetwork.com/images/cms/anime-spotlight/110829/tanya_cut03.jpg, the nations appear to be UK, France, Switzerland, Italy, Super Holy Roman Empire (BeNeLux, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, and old Yugoslavia), Russia, Rumania, Bulgaria, and Scandinavia (I would assume Greece, Spain, and Portugal which are not visible, probably follow their actual borders). |

Super Holy Roman Empire ... snazzy name! But yes, that answers my question about Austro-Hungary. I wonder if this world's dynasty are called the Hagsburgs?

No, I think we are stuck with the Hohenzollerns. The uniforms are 100% Prussian inspired, if it was a southern dynasty, the uniforms would be Austrian white or Bavarian blue. |

The bombers depicted are indeed the 'Blériot 127-2'.
A total of 42 Blériot 127-2s were built, none would see actual combat. Flown by the Armée de l'Air from 1929 until 1934. Edit: Though only only a model, the pictures are in color and the model is accurate. http://www.facflyer.com/bleriot127_photos.htm |

Yes, that's definitely it, Nordhmmer! Thanks for the ID.
As for the Poland/Dakia comparison, I was meaning that more in the sense of how quickly they got decimated by the Germans. That they're a stand-in for Romania is, in retrospect, pretty obvious. |

I believe all the illustrations in the endings are from the Light Novel, so its technically not a fanservice, but a stealth advertisement
