with the most glaring being Shinichi's smear campaign to oust Hube from power, which includes a false accusation of sexual misconduct against Arian. While Hube was definitely creepy about her and clearly wanted her sexually, he never actually acted on it, and it feels like the story crossed a line there

In war there are some lines that shouldn't be crossed, but false accusations against enemy leaders is not one of them. This is a war, and not only is it a war, it is a war of survival for the demons. In wars of survival, you either are playing to win, or playing to die, there is no middle ground.

I agree with you in general, and if this had been a more serious book, it wouldn't have been an issue. But this is first and foremost a comedy, and the "war" is largely casualty-free spoiler[(because the heroes are immortal and everyone else can be resurrected if they've got most of their body left, and the Blue Demon King takes care to either not kill or cleanly kill soldiers for that reason)], so it's easily the worst thing that happens in the entire thing. Don't get me wrong, Hube needs to go, but it's simultaneously played for laughs and the darkest aspect of the entire novel, which makes it feel, well, off.

Reminds me a lot of goblin is very strong, if that one had a point instead of being slice of life. I will keep an eye out for the manga/anime of this one.
