GAME: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I'd say this review nails how I've been feeling about MGS5. Many reviews are enamored with it being an open-world Metal Gear, but seem to brush off the parts that don't feel very "Metal Gear" in favor of the open-world aspects. In terms of things like controls, graphics, and such, it really is quite impressive. However, things like fewer and shorter cutscenes make it seem like the focus was on pleasing people that didn't like the series, rather than those that keep coming back for things like that. Actually, many of the most glowing comments I've seen for the game are from people who also mention that it is their first experience with the series. I suppose one nice thing about that is it somewhat mitigates how often the game reminds me that David Hayter was replaced for little or no reason.

Basically, I've been coming away with the opinion that it is a good game, but not necessarily that good of a Metal Gear. For as much turmoil as the development seems to have caused between Kojima and Konami, it is kind of a shame that they ended up falling into many of the same pitfalls that plague pretty much every open-world game.

That was more or less my thoughts on MGS4. I haven't played this one yet,but 4 didn't feel like a MG game that's for sure(other the convoluted nonsense of a story).

My friends have been talking a lot about Metal Gear lately and all I know is it seems like there are a lot of people being in comas a lot.

The series doesn't even star the same man in the end, so it couldn't be different. Solid Snake is a covert operative, and Big Boss is, well, Big Boss. If MGS V was the same sneaking mission that MGS 1 was, I would be disappointed.

It's like Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 4. Yes, the mood and controls are different, but design has to move on.

From what I can tell, there isn't a reason that was given. Not even to David Hayter when he asked about it. He invited one of the producers to lunch when he heard production was ongoing, and asked about when they might want him to come in, and was basically told, "Yeah, we won't be needing you."

I can't think of a reason other than Kojima feeling like he wanted to make it a bit more "Hollywood" by including a someone like Sutherland. Apparently, he contacted Avi Arad in order to find such an actor. Plus, the Japanese actor is the same as ever, and I might have bought that Big Boss's coma was a factor somehow, if not for the fact that Sutherland is also in Ground Zeroes.

I'd say your review of the review of the game nails how I've been feeling about.....uhhhhh......aww, crap, I've quoted too deep. What are we talking about, again? *passes out*

*wakes up* Oh, yeah, it was that game with the sheep balloons I watched someone stream for about 5 hours while I did laundry a couple days ago. Was that a Metal Gear game? Yeah, I honestly was just watching and wondering "When....is the.....uhhh.....excitement....going...to...happen?" It's exactly as you and Dave said. It really loses the series charm as an open world game. And I don't think it had to, but I still think it does. I think you have a point about trying to please people by going so far in the other direction from the previous. It seems too far, not balanced. Even when Snake's actually advancing the plot and meeting smoking-hot, mostly-naked sniper chicks, it was still...so....*winces*......boring.

It's made a drastic change, and I have no doubt a player could happily get lost in all the new base and mission management aspects of the game and much, much more. But it just feels like a cardinal sin for a Metal Gear game to be boring. Metal Gear games have been about suspense from the very beginning. In this one, I would absolutely spend most of my time ballooning sheep and other animals to the animal rescue base if I owned the game.

Wow. Thought I was the only one who wrote a review in this vein. Glad to know I'm not alone in being a little underwhelmed by this entry. Great write-up!

There is a nice tidbit easter egg in the game where the report of the murder from P.T. can be heard. Apparently if you can find a radio in a tent and interact with it, you can hear without the garbled noise in P.T., and also in full.

Well, in general, I've only enjoyed the series when it's about Solid Snake, and not his dad. 'Cus all those 'prequels' involve some form of micro-management. So I think the only compelling reason for me to get into MGS V is the way Kojima's pushing the edginess of the story in his marketing of the game. Though, at the same time, I will concede it comes a bit more gory and messy than it needs to be. So I'm still sitting it out to wait for more opinions from non-MGS fans. OTOH, I did like Peacewalker a tad more than MGS 3, because there was a bit more emphasis on strategy like the regular games, rather than just 'change your camo when you land on this square'. Razz

Can't even play mine, just crashes on startup and no fix has worked yet. Luckily I got it free when I bought a new graphics card recently so not too bothered.

Also never played a MGS game so I probably won't have any of the disappointment that some of you have, I'm kind of hoping it's like Witcher in open world-ness and gameplay but with technology.

Which I believe makes up a very small group of people. Seeing as how even those that like those long cutscenes can't seem to remember anything about them aside from them being overly long ,needlessly convoluted, and occasionally featuring details that have nothing to do with the plot itself.

Everyone has a breaking point for watching cutscenes.

Whether or not people liked the content, a long cut scene at the and of MGS1 was just fine. The game was over, so just sit back and watch some environmental message.

Breaking up gameplay with long cutscenes is not what you come to games for. At least give people something to do if you're going to make them watch a movie.

I only saw the first 1 hour of the game (deduct the cutscenes and we have about 20 minutes of gameplay), and the game is already off-the-walls. Plus, trolling from Kojima Smile (Who else activated the Chicken Hat option in the Settings?)
