Ah, this was a memorable manga. It's not to everyone's taste as it's a bizzare SOL and downright dark manga with very bizzare symbolism, but it's worth a try if you don't mind the symbolism.

Just like how it was hard to adapt a Light Novel like "Bakemonogatari" since it`s a story about a highschool student mostly in his head and with straight dialogue.
I wonder if Punpun will ever be tried in an anime form. |

While this series interests me greatly, knowing how dark it becomes...I'm unsure if I'll ever read it. Just some of the themes it touches on and the events later on, seem too dark for me.
It's really a struggle, as I do want to read it. May be something I eventually get around to. |

Wow, this is strange...but oddly compelling, reading the review. This cover is not going to convince many people to buy this book, as it doesn't show anything about what Goodnight Punpun is about.If anything, I fear it may be misleading due to the title sounding like a Sanrio franchise and the central character looking like a crudely drawn mascot.
I can see it working as an anime film, or at least taking parts of it. From what I hear, it's 13 volumes long, which is a lot longer than I expected.
On the flip side, every school I've attended was a rough ghetto school, so something dark like this would be right up my alley. I don't really see enough stories dealing with the darker side of childhood, especially from the perspective of a child who doesn't really understand the perverse things happening around him or her (and, based on this review's description of the protagonist, may be autistic). South Park, personally, pulls off the "children caught in situations they don't understand" schtick pretty well though. I have to wonder, to anyone who's read both--as far as manga about messed up childhoods go, how is Goodnight Punpun compared to not simple? |

Goodnight Punpun isn't really a manga about childhood, Punpun is only a child in the beginning. The story follows him as he grows up, hence why it's so long. It's more of a coming of age story. |

They're both in my top five, they're excellent! Ian and Punpun have some similar trauma in their youths but the way they grow and handle it is totally different. As miserable as not simple is, I'd say it's probably still happier than Goodnight Punpun... Punpun is also more of a coming of age story and it's a lot longer, following him from childhood to adulthood. I hope that helps! |
