Pacific Rim Gets Film Sequel & Animated Series
posted on by Egan Loo
Director/writer Guillermo del Toro confirmed on Thursday that his Pacific Rim film is not only spawning a sequel film with co-writers Zak Penn and Travis Beacham, but also a new animated series. The director and his team are developing both between now and April 2017. They are also continuing the comic book series inspired by the film. He added, "We're all very happy to be bringing you more Kaiju, more Jaegers kicking each others' butts."
Universal will open Pacific Rim 2 in 3D and IMAX on April 7, 2017. Warner Brothers had distributed the first film, but Legendary ended their co-financing and co-producing deal at the end of last year. (Legendary and Warner are still "moving forward" with a sequel to Gareth Edwards' Godzilla remake film.) Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will return to produce with del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share will be an executive producer.
The director told BuzzFeed that he would like the characters Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam), Mako (Rinko Kikuchi), Newt (Charlie Day), Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) "and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau" (Ron Perlman) to return, "but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we're ready to have a blast."
