Attack on Titan Novel Illustrated by Last Exile's Range Murata

Ryō Kawakami pens Kakuzetsu Toshi no Jōō based on Hajime Isayama's manga

This year's 33rd issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine is confirming on Wednesday that a new Attack on Titan novel will debut on August 1. The first volume of Ryō Kawakami's two-volume Kakuzetsu Toshi no Jōō (The Queen of the Isolated City) novel will ship on that date with illustrations by Range Murata (Last Exile, Blue Submarine No. 6, Shangri-La). The tagline for the novel is, "Can people really be this cruel…"

Kodansha describes the story:

The future that was taken for granted was broken by the attack of the Titans. Wall Maria was pierced, and even in the Quinta District where Mathias and his allies live, Titans appear. Due to this, the line of supplies is cut off from the country, and the citizens begin to panic. Rita, a soldier who had joined the brigade of occupation troops, tries to protect the town that has fallen into chaos, but due to the forceful methods the brigade put into action using actual Titans, the entire city becomes afraid. In order to meet up with Rita, Mathias takes the helping hands of a band of thieves...

Hajime Isayama is credited in the novel for creating the original Attack on Titan manga, which recount the battles between humans and the giants who now rule the world outside humans' walled enclaves. The manga already inspired a hit television anime series, two upcoming compilation anime films, an upcoming live-action film, and several manga and novel spinoffs.
