The official website for the live-action film adaptation of Sui Ishida's Tokyo Ghoul manga announced on Saturday that a sequel film, tentatively titled Tokyo Ghoul 2 has been green-lit for 2019.
Masataka Kubota (center in image below) is returning as Ken Kaneki, but Maika Yamamoto (left in image below) is replacing Fumika Shimizu as Tōka Kirishima. (Shimizu retired from acting to join the Happy Science religious organization last year.) Shota Matsuda (right in image below) is joining the cast as Shū Tsukiyama, a character who appears in the manga but was not in the last film.
The film's planner and distributor teased the news earlier this week.
The first film premiered on July 3, 2017 at Anime Expo in Los Angeles. It then debuted in July 7 in Berlin, and July 10 at the Marunouchi Piccadilly theater in Chiyoda, Japan before its wide theatrical release in Japan on July 29, 2017. The film ranked #5 in its opening weekend in Japan.
Funimation screened the film in theaters in the United States last October.
