Rob Letterman's live-action Pokemón: Detective Pikachu film earned US$24.8 million to rank #3 in its second weekend in the United States box office. The film has earned an estimated cumulative total of US$94,001,846 in the United States. The film earned an estimated US$53.8 million internationally over the same weekend, and is the #1 film internationally over the weekend. The film has now earned an estimated US$193.4 million internationally, and has earned an estimated cumulative total of US$287.4 million worldwide.
The film had the highest U.S. opening weekend box office for any film adaptation of a video game (unadjusted for inflation), with its US$54 million opening weekend earnings topping Lara Croft Tomb Raider's US$47.7 million in 2001.
The film opened in Japan on May 3 at #3, below Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire and Avengers: Endgame. The film has earned 1,465,395,700 yen (about US$13 million) in Japan as of May 12.
The film stars Justice Smith as main character Tim Goodman and Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu. Letterman directed the film, with a script by Nicole Perlman and Letterman. A sequel has reportedly already been greenlit.
