Azumi Manga Gets 4th Stage Play in 2020

Yui Imaizumi stars as title assassin

Theater production company RUP announced on Tuesday that it is producing a new stage play adaptation of Yū Koyama's AZUMI manga titled Azumi Sengoku-hen (Azumi Warring States Arc) that will run at the Bunkamura Theater Cocoon in Tokyo in March, and at the Cool Japan Park Osaka WW Hall in Osaka in April. Yui Imaizumi will play the titular role of the assassin Azumi. Shunichi Okamura, who directed the 2005, 2015, and 2016 stage play adaptations of Azumi, will return to direct the play.

Koyama began the first Azumi manga in 1994 in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior magazine, and it won the Excellence Prize at the first ACA Media Arts Festival, Manga Division in 1997. He ended the series in 2008. This series inspired the 2005 and 2016 stage play adaptations, the latter of which was also titled Azumi Bakumatsu-hen.

In 2009, Koyama launched a continuation of the series also titled Azumi (title written in English instead of Japanese) in the same magazine, and ended it in February 2014. Shogakukan published 18 compiled book volumes for the manga. This series inspired the 2014 stage play adaptation.

The first series has also been adapted into two live-action movies, both of which were released in North America by Urban Vision.
