100 Meters Anime, Mamoru Oshii's Angel's Egg 4K Remaster Screen at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles
posted on by Adriana Hazra

This year's Beyond Fest will take place at Los Angeles from September 23-October 8. The event will also host the U.S. premiere of the live-action film of Kotake Create's infinite-loop horror game The Exit 8 (8-ban Deguchi) on September 27 at 10:15 p.m.
100 Meters held its world premiere at Annecy on June 12. The movie will premiere in Japan on Friday.
GKIDS will screen the anime film of Uoto's 100 Meters (Hyakuemu) manga on October 12-14 in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub. There will be an opening screening in Los Angeles on October 10.
Tori Matsuzaka plays the gifted runner Togashi, while Shōta Sometani plays Komiya, a hard worker whose obsession with the 100-meter dash began when he met Togashi.
Kenji Iwaisawa (ON-GAKU: Our Sound) is directing the film at Rock 'n' Roll Mountain. Pony Canyon, TBS TV, and ASMIK Ace are credited with production. Yasuyuki Mutō (Tokyo Revengers) is writing the script. Keisuke Kojima is the character designer and chief animation director, and Keikankun Yamaguchi is the art director. Producers include Yūsuke Terada, Yūki Katayama, and Akane Taketsugu. Hiroaki Tsutsumi is composing the music for the film.
The band Official HiGE DANdism performs the film's theme song "Rashisa."
A preview of the film screened at last year's Annecy International Film Festival in June as part of the festival's Work in Progress lineup. The festival described the story:
Togashi is born to run. As a kid, he is naturally gifted and wins every 100-meter race without effort. But in sixth grade, he meets Komiya, a transfer student who is full of determination but lacks technique. In teaching him, Togashi gives Komiya a new purpose: to win no matter what. Years pass by, Togashi and Komiya meet again as rivals on the track and reveal their true selves.
Uoto (Orb: On the Movements of the Earth) launched the Hyakuemu manga in Kodansha's Magazine Pocket app in November 2018 as Uoto's first series, and Kodansha published the manga's third compiled book volume in August 2019.

The film will get its New York premiere at the 63rd New York Film Festival (NYFF) in the "Revivals" category, with four screenings planned on September 27 and 30, as well as October 4 and 6. The film will also screen at Fantastic Fest, which takes place in Austin, Texas from September 18-25.
Spain's Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival will screen the 4K remaster at this year's event. The festival will take place from October 9-19 in Sitges, Spain.
GKIDS will screen the 4K remaster in North America beginning on November 19.
Tokuma Shoten announced the remaster in May 2024. France-based Gebeka International acquired the worldwide sales rights to the 4K remaster in May 2024. GKIDS will also release the film on home video.
The remaster is based on a new scan of a 35mm film negative of the anime.
The Angel's Egg original video anime (OVA) debuted in Japan in 1985. Oshii directed the OVA at Studio DEEN. Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano conceived the story, and Oshii wrote the screenplay and directed. Amano also handled the art direction. Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, and Yutaka Wada produced the film. Yoshihiro Kanno composed the music.
HBO Max is adding Angel's Egg in a new partnership with GKIDS.
The Japan Society hosted a screening of the film at its museum in New York City in September 2023. Prior to that 2023 screening by The Japan Society, the anime had not received a release in the West in its original form. Carl Colpaert's live-action/animated 1987 film In the Aftermath spliced footage from the film.
