Seeing the strong dislike of Japanese version of Dragon Ball (even by people who otherwise prefer subs), this is very courageous decision. Not sure if too many Americans will be interested in Japanese Dragon Ball seiyuu. But Horikawa has many other interesting roles that may be of interest for some fans, so it may work in the end.

Why is there a strong dislike for the Japanese version of Dragon Ball? The show was never meant to be solely made for the American audience. Just because it took off on CN doesn't mean Dragon Ball has to be English only. For an anime fan, this ideology is just hypocritical.
That being said, I'm glad to see Ryo Horikawa coming to AX. The man has talent.

The only thing people dislike about japanese Dragonball is Nowaza and the music and even then it's not a universal dislike.

At least Horikawa-san is not an 80-year-old woman playing an adult alien male with a childish voice.

Nostalgia. They grew up with the Faulconer score and English VAs. There's even people who took it upon themselves to re-insert Faulconer's music in Kai and Super. It's not just limited to Dragon Ball, a lot of American fandoms are like that since American dubs tend to be more changed than other countries dubs which results in a split in the American fandom.

Actually, I've heard more then just Nozawa and music complaints. Many preople also criticized Jouji Yanami as Kaiou, even though Sean Schemmel did much worse job on that role then Yanami ever did. And there were other. But the main point is, that because of this dislike, there's even less people in US that are familiar with Japanese version of Dragon Ball and that's what I was pointing out. Nothing less, nothing more.

Besides the fact that other anime did this too (Black Butler or Naruto (or maybe more accurately, Boruto with adult Naruto's voice) being the most known examples) and weren't criticized for that, at least not as much as Dragon Ball was, you said it, Goku is alien, so, you can't apply Earth standards as to how he should sound on him
And trust me, I'll rather accept 80 years old woman voicing adult man, than 40+ years old man voicing Elementary School kid, as is the norm in many English dubs (with Digimon and Yo-Kai Watch being two of the worst examples for me).

I assume that part of this has to do with Yanami delivery falling off due to age which was an issue even the sub watchers had with his performance by the time Super came around.

I would think that they're familiar with it since A) They by now know it's a japanese work and B) You occasionally see them starting shit on messageboards or youtube over Nowaza being an ill fit for Goku and all that other nonsense I mentioned earlier.

That's true, and even I admit Yanami shouldn't have been cast for Super at all. However, there were complaints to his performance from American dub viewers even before that, following praise for Schemmel's work on that role, which I never got, since that was one of the worst cast role in history of anime dubs, only being surpassed recently by Bear in Yo-Kai Watch and maybe by Eric Stuart's James in Pokémon, but that is, fortunately, matter of past. I don't expect Funimation to have balls to recast Schemmel on King Kai any time soon.
