In some cases, "research" would require playing these, uh, games.
Seriously, I'd rather watch shows about CHILDREN'S CARD GAMES than subject myself to that. |

HAR HAR HAR! Come on, grow up. What you are saying isn't all that different from people who think that all anime are DBZ or porn.
Where the heck did you get the impression that the girls obey the players orders. In Tsukihime or Fate or other more serious game it isn't even that uncommon to get killed by the heroine. Also most games don't have animated sex scenes, except some of sexfest games. Please listen to others, we have already made the point that these games that we are talking about are something totally different from porn. For gods sake Fate/Stay Night and most of the popular games have PS2 all-ages versions. I don't believe there to be someone desperate enough to play Fate/Stay Night for the porn that's only 1% of the game and unvoiced. How much I enjoyed Fate/Stay Night wouldn't have changed if it didn't have porn in it. Most of my favourite characters in it and other eroges are mainly male characters anyway. Can you understand that every eroge isn't the same, like every anime or book isn't. There can be something like Artificial Girl that's as deep as a puddle in Sahara. Then there's great plot focused games like: Kira☆Kira: which was more than little like Beck with all focus on music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9yLqmHCGXs Soukai no Oujo-tachi: still in the middle of playing, but enjoying what I have seen mainly because you don't often see an eroge set in a WW2ish submarine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xavale1Ufw0 Muv Luv Alternative: the game just screams EPIC, it has character voiced by Norio Wakamoto, music by Jam Project and mechas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJIqjmBPoSE&feature=channel_page Pretty much anything by Nitro+. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Exu5FN-QfFM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chTjM8gQ8i0&feature=related And the list goes on. Also the Tsukihime anime sucks big time when compared to the game. Everyone who yet haven't should download and play Narcissu http://narcissu.insani.org. |

I do recommend it, if you like shonen magic/supernatural/swordplay type shows. Some people complain about pacing, but that's in the beginning. It seems to take longer to get started than most, but the plot is fairly involved, and there are lots of characters. By the time heavy action starts, you really know the characters, so a slow ramp is not the negative it might be in other shows. And it's not "no action", just less than you might expect based on the genre. And as I recall, there's not a panty shot to be seen (which is unfortunate given some of the character designs ). |

Well, it sounds interesting at least.
To get back on topic, though, I seriously don't know if this show will turn out to be even moderately good. I mean when it come to eroge-based or harem-style shows, does anyone REALLY expect something on the level of GITS or CB or something like that? |

Here's the point: 1.) Any source material can be adapted into a good, or even great, anime. 2.) No one knows if it's good or not until it is released (unless Ghibli makes it ). |

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I'd take you to task on that about something like video game-based animes, or even live-action versions of video games or animes. I guess some things are harder to translate than others. But if F/SN has come closer than most of those shows to being worth watching, I guess some things aren't THAT impossible. You yourself said you've played the very occasional eroge game...are they at all interesting, or do they often give you inert balls? |

Than you're missing out out on some of the most influential titles in the genre, your loss.
And mecha titles like Brainpowered, Kurogane no Line barrels and Candidate for Goddess are just quality.. amirite or amirite? |

I think pparker put it as clearly and simply as possible and if you still don't understand I guess there's no helping it. You don't have to like the genre but don't go around criticizing it while you're ignorant about it.
I'd call that a loss. |

I was referring to the "HA HA HA, OH WOW"-esque bad mech shows he mentioned.

I think you can see how that wasn't too clear. But yeah sorry for that misunderstanding then. |

Way to miss the point boy wnoder, I'll make it easier for you and take you through it step by step. You - These shows are "appealing" lol Me - So are these mecha ones You - I didn't watch them lol Me - /facepalm. Every genre is filled with crap, the majority of anime is crap, the amount of good to crap series in the mecha genre is probably the same ratio is the genre you're posting about now. Is Code Geass crap btw since it's filled with moe and harem or since it has mecha in it gets a pass? |

It depends on the product in question. This genre is unique in that not all titles are really intended to be porn. Some are written by aspiring novelists who take storytelling seriously (but aren't talented enough to break into mainstream media), and in many cases, the sex scenes are merely tossed in to satisfy market requirements. Aside from the 18+ ero crowd, there's virtually no one else willing to buy visual novels. When these games become popular enough, they get ported to mainstream consoles like the PS2 or Xbox360 (adult scenes removed). |

I really don't care about ero games. The anime that have been based on them that I've seen ranged between good <----> awesome.
Shuffle was the weakest of those I watched, and I still enjoyed it. Air was freaking awesome. Kanon was great. I love ef (memories most, but melodies is not bad either) and .. I just can't get enough of these things. I have never played any of the games in my life. And then there is Fate/Stay Night, which is also pretty cool. I mean.. I just don't see what's not to like personally. I don't care what something is based on, as has been said, pretty much anything can be made good if the source material has a decent story. Even if you don't like Kanon or think Shuffle is too contrived, the series all are hardly like some of the portrayals of the games are here. Except in the case of Shuffle, there is barely fanservice (at least in the line of Kanokon or To Love Ru or Rosario). I got into anime on more typical series (started with DBZ, and I like a lot of Shonen anime), but I like variety and I'm all about the "ero game adaptations" thus far. They have just been overall good. I totally disagree with anyone who thinks this is a bad thing to see. They certainly do a much better job than the US has done with our movies based on games (or games based on movies). |

I'm actually pretty pumped for this. While I'll admit this is mainly because I'm a huge fan of characters with animal ears, I've heard some pretty good things about the game from various forums and blogs. It probably won't appeal to the action crowd like Fate/Stay Night did because it's not an action oriented story, but it does sound like this is one of those "plot heavy, porn light" erogames, rather than the other way around.
Of course, I'm also bracing myself that it could flop, because I've seen quite a few awful erogame adaptations. Edit: I'm going to weigh in on the whole "porn vs. plot" issue. Some erogames are all about the sex, including almost all those that have been commercially translated into English - likely the source of this misconception. (A quick note on terminology: erogame: game with adult content. Visual novel: an interactive fiction format. A particular product may be both, or it may be one or the other.) Many of the best regarded visual novels, however, have only a few sex scenes, if they have them at all. The only reason I would say that these can be called porn at all is because the sex often feels more explicit than necessary or tacked on. To me, they're better classified as stories that contain strong adult content. Just as in other good mature media, the adult content in a good visual novel is part of the attraction, not THE attraction. TV anime based on VN is pretty much always based on games which follow the "story with some adult content" model. Games that are all about the sex get adapted into hentai anime. The TV adaptations themselves range from great to awful. I've seen some that were a wast of time. On the other hand, EF: A Tale of Memories and it's sequel are some of the best anime out there, with creative visual and storytelling techniques that shame almost any other show out there. I'm also finding the mindscrew that is the recent Chaos;Head entertaining despite the fact it's supposedly not as good as the game version. As for Fate/Stay Night - I was always under the impression that the game was great (not to mention long -we're talking an Lord of the Rings amount of text here), but the anime was merely okay. It's probably a good choice for those new to erogame adaptations though, since it's a lot more action oriented than something like EF, which is purely a romantic drama. And kudos to those that recommended that those interested in the VN genre try playing Ever 17. No need to be into adult stuff, as the game doesn't have any porn in it. It's also commercially available and has a plot that ranks among the best I've ever experienced in any medium - what more could a newbie ask for? The only downside I can see is that it requires multiple playthroughs to understand the plot, something some may find frustrating. And hey, no need to take my word for it: http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/ever17/index.html |
