I was kind of surprised that the ROD OVA on AS didn't try to translate any of the onscreen Japanese text. I know we Americans tend to be dead-set against subtitles on our television programs, but I thought some scenes were potentially confusing. For example, early on as Yomiko is going book-shopping there is a sign posted with her picture at one of the stores that says something like "This is our best customer." Since they didn't try to translate it at all, it could have been a wanted poster for all the viewers knew.

I didn't even see that. Shocked Didn't go over my head.

Glad to hear that ROD wasn't edited because that was a great OVA. Want more! Wish I had Tech TV where I'm at now. Mad

Huge ATHF fan here.. well, perhaps not the latest series as much as the first few series, and Sealab really jumped the shark recently, which is disappointing as the first couple of series of that were hilarious.

Great to hear that ROD got through unedited, i caught the last 10 minutes a few years back at an anime con in Melbourne when i was early for Voices of a Distant Star. That 10 minutes was enough for me to purchase the ova immediately when it was released Anime hyper

The subtitles that were on the disc were horrid. I don't know who chose the color scheme but they were black letters against a dark background. Pretty worthless, if you ask me.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I just checked the subtitles on my copy of the ROD OVA and they were yellow letters, which provided a pretty good contrast for most of the film.

The subs were pretty bad in the translation department, though. Case in point were the notes all around Yomiko's apartment, which were translated to read as if a child had written them ("Drink this up, up, up!"). Also there was the mistake in the bookstore when the bookseller says "Immortal Beloved" costs 200,000 yen (around US$1,900) but the subs say 3,500 yen (around $33, which is much more affordable).

But we're getting a bit off topic here...

The dub used 3500 as well, fyi. It could make Yomiko's situation a little more dire, I guess.

What he is talking about is some of the signs around her apartment that were translated had subs that were black, I figured they did that because it wasn't too important to the story. I'm sure those signs really did say that in Japanese. After all, she is a little childish (am I talking about the right person?). Any dialogue subs were the standard yellow

You asked about the translations of the Japanese text Confused
The subtitles for the signs and everything are black on black.

I know the post-its said things like "eat this, ne ne ne"
Which at first you can see where the script-writer probably just subsituted what they thought would be a good replacement for "ne ne ne"

Then later...not a spoiler so don't worry...

You learn very early on in the ROD TV that the notes are left by Yomiko's friend...Nenene Very Happy

I'm such a ROD fangirl, so I thought that was just the coolest thing ever. Anime hyper

Okay, you're right -- this is true about the notes around Yomiko's room. However, I was specifically talking about the text of the "most valued customer" poster of her, which is done in the same yellow text as the rest of the dialogue. Razz

We can blame the Manga folks for these mistranslations; they changed the correct translations that Ai (who is credited as translator) gave them. Go figure.

I guess the minor mention of an auxiliary character was just too much for Manga to handle. A footnote or translation note in the Extras menu would've worked a lot better than making Yomiko seem outright childish (instead of just lovably absent-minded like she's meant to be).

I just remember something, since TechTV/G4 has the TV series of ROD, how did they do with episode 9, since it has the prominent frontal nudity with that character in the underground cave looking for that treasure. Did they edited that out, or did that part air in its entirety (sp?)

It wasn't cutout or anything, they showed her nude, though no features(genetilia, nipples) were visible.

So they digitally edited out the nipples. A minor, but not too noticeable edit.

I saw that episode recently and they had blurred her.

When I've seen full nudity in anime unless it's in a U.S.A. porn edit, nude girls/women have a skin bikini, ala Tenchi bath scenes or the R.o.D. OVA opening. And in most cases the skin Bikini works for me.
