Definitely wasn't as bad as all that, it was entertaining excess that's Oku's calling card. I would agree that in some respects, things weren't as developed as they could've been, but you take what you can get at 11 eps.

Like Gantz (the manga, not the wretched Ichiro Itano adaptation), Inuyashiki is a fun roller coaster ride that manages to engage my emotions when it's supposed to. Sometimes, that's all I need from a series.

I wanted to like this, and I LOVED Inuyashiki as a character. This sweet old dude who just loves people so much and wants to save everyone he can. It's inspiring in the same way that I find Akira from Crybaby inspiring. The problem(and the difference between those two shows) is that the overall show here feels angry, misanthropic, and mean-spirited. I just didn't enjoy almost any second that Shishigami was on screen, and episode two made me especially sad. It's not that you can't portray things like children getting drowned in the bloody bathwater of their recently murdered parent, but the way it was depicted here felt like I was supposed to feel some sense of catharsis, or a "yeah, I'm angry, people are just the worst!"... I just felt sad. I don't think we live in a world where everyone is as bad and selfish as Oku thinks they are. And as much as I was compelled to watch all of this because of how engaging Inuyashiki was as a character, I don't enjoy watching shows where everyone just sucks.

Yeah, they were both way too harsh on the show. I can understand the criticism of the self-indulgence with the comment about Gantz and the 2channers part. But honestly I have little doubt that people who lurk and post on 2chan actually do act like that; it's easy for them to be an uncaring sociopath online when you're completely anonymous with no personal consequences to your words or actions.
I think the series is one part cynical due to its perception of current youth, which, from my perspective, isn't that far from the truth. But also highly touching at parts.
It was one of my favorites from last year.[/spoiler]

This is the earlier unlikable Kurono I'm contrasting against.

This is the later much more likable Kurono I'm talking about. You forgot to mention "his flat-chested girlfriend who gives him blowjobs."

The only reason I continued watching Inuyashiki was the OP and ED. Otherwise, I'd have dropped it like Garo~ Vanishing Line with all that dark and edgy plot and art.

I do want to watch this. I had started reading the manga awhile back but I haven't requested anymore since I lost my glasses, AGAIN!! But I do want to check this show out. I was kind of surprised they wanted to produce an animated adaptation of the series.

I remember reading the manga and thinking almost nothing about it. TBF every criticism Nicholas and Jacob gave felt really spot on for me: the edginess, the absurd villain, the one-dimensional characters (seriously, black-or-white morality again?), the tragedy porn, the skepticism about youth... All that was missing in the story was some comment about millenials being the worst generation ever and that would have been the cherry on top.
Still, even if the manga didn't leave much of an impression the anime was worth a watch, if nothing else then because it looked really great. The story feels still empty, trying way too hard to shock with the same old people=shit formula and masking it all behind the realistic seinen-ish art style. The animation however hid its flaws better and made it's silliness entertaining. You can also see that the staff put some love into this work, it has some beautiful shots and heartfelt moments, if nothing else.
It's also a huge improvement from Gantz. Although Oku Hiroya is not one of my favourite authors, his use of art is so impressive that it makes me root for him all the same. Hopefully he will nail the narrative aspect next time.

Kurono was still pretty unlikable to an extent even after he supposedly was supposed to be more likable which was my point.

Seemed to be all Tae was good for....aside from either being a distressed damsel or getting killed.

I've read and watched all of Oku's stuff. The man is a genius and isn't scared to portray the world in all its true, harsh brutality. Anyone with a sheltered life would def not like this sort of genre I think.
The real world isn't always rainbows and sunshine, and Oku knows that. The only let down for me is there are only 11 eps, I mean wtf? A continued Gantz would be nice... Human dippers, anyone?

Well, about cancer, it might sound repetitive but... uhm... it is objectively the most common disease people die of out there, second only to heart attacks perhaps, but heart attacks are a very sudden thing while this worked better for slow diseases. I seem to remember reading somewhere that everyone has, like, 50% or so chance of getting cancer at least once in their lifetime which is frighteningly high so I don't think that's too off the mark.

I liked the show a lot. I gave the first episode a chance and it was only okay but good enough for me to watch the second episode which also passed the test and from there I watched it all the way through. From the sounds of things, it doesn't seem like there's ever gonna be a second season which disappoints me. The last anime I watched with this tone was Erased. I'd love to see more.
