I'm more upset at all hentai being lumped together as child porn than I am about the issue of the guy being sentenced.

As a proud Canadian, I gotta say I still love my country! Warts and all.

Random people getting arrested over fake cartoon sexual entertainment that I don't even remotely care about is a small price to pay for:
1-Kinder Surprise Eggs! Yeah, when I went to DC I learned they were illegal down south.

2-I can buy codeine without a prescription. As a high school teacher, this is immensely helpful in dealing with the back pain of standing around all day, and dealing with the pain of working as a high school teacher.

3-Our politicians ain't fake. If there's a problem, they'll admit to it! Cocaine and scotch be damned.

4-Rich culture and delicacies of my people: Bacon, beer and beavertails. Take that, Asia!

Countries should have certain websites geolocked that deal with this kind of problem in society, or shut down for good.

Do anime conventions in Canada sometimes have hentai panels by FAKKU?

For another crime that yielded 60 days in jail, involving an actual child victim, here's an exhibit from past Spring;
Quebec man who killed daughter with slap gets 60 days in jail

Canada, get your act together...

I don't like this ruling at all. Confiscation and bans are one thing, but this seems to rise to the level of a fine, if that, not imprisonment. I can't see in what sense justice is served by this. There's nobody really to give satisfaction to, whether through restitution or retribution, and I'm skeptical that it will have a significant deterrent effect, which I don't think is really necessary. What Mr. Regis did almost surely violated his employer's information technology policy and is probably indisputable grounds for dismissal, which strikes me as punishment enough. The public interest is not served and nobody is really made whole by locking him up for two month.

Man, after this, if that Chris Farley impersonator gets re-elected, somebody's gonna have to stage an intervention. The United States is going through its own stuff right now, like how a celebrity goes through rehab, so some other nation will have to do it. I don't know... maybe Norway?

The two months is inconsequential compared to being placed on a sex offender list. Even if it's only for 10 years, it's not like the public record you used to be on such a list ever goes away.

Okay, I understand. Illegal is illegal, nothing can change it. But I'm not upset or hating these people. People just deserve what they deserve for not following the laws.
Hard to argue about that, but who knows when the thought police will be at your doorstep next because they've decided that some interest of yours is "deviant"?

In representative democracies, people change it. That's why it's important to be informed and vote for appropriate candidates.
What "appropriate candidates" would those be? There's no political ground to be gained by standing up for porn and pervs. But there are powerful adversaries on both the Left and the Right in opposition, whether it's progressive feminists who want to fight the exploitation of women and children (real or otherwise), or conservative fundamentalists who want to ban obscenity in the name of religion.

It cannot happen in the way you described. Canada's law is black and white and treats it the same as the real thing and results in mandatory sex offender registration. If found or reported, the result s the same across the board. In fact there is also an official government media censor/ban list Canada keeps.

Very different from the US, where it's treated as a class of obscenity (which is different from CA). Because it's hard to prove and completely relative, meaning it can legally vary for the exact same case, hentai remains legally pervasive. But at the same time, it is also legally risky. In other words, it can be both legal and illegal at the same time.

I for one count that as a major plus for Canada. Of course in principle I'm opposed to the criminalization of anything that is not directly harmful to anyone. But pragmatically, given that such an idealist position has little bearing on reality, we should at least have laws that are as clear cut as possible in terms of what you can and can't do. Obscenity laws are by far the scariest because they can more or less be bent to make anything illegal so long as you find the right jury.

Sex offender list for cartoons; what a joke. Can you imagine if it was some 20 year old? His entire life would have been ruined before it even began because he watched anime.

watch hentai and porn = reduces sex crimes. There are many study on it. That's why you can't ban porn. the countries that ban porn have high sex crimes rate.

watch hentai with loli = reduces sex crime on children.

"Results from the Czech Republic showed, as seen everywhere else studied (Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sweden, USA), that rape and other sex crimes have not increased following the legalization and wide availability of pornography. In addition, the study found that the incidence of child sex abuse has fallen since 1989, when child pornography became readily accessible -- a phenomenon also seen in Denmark and Japan....."

I would argue, they should make more loli hentai to save the real children.
