Hey rgrothrock, could you be thinking either of Detroit Metal City or Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad?
On the cover of the very first Bleach manga, Ichigo Kurosaki is wearing a wristband that actually looks like the old flag of socialist Yugoslavia. Is that what it is? If that is the case, what's the reason?
Thanks!

I don't think this might be a general question, but I don't really want to make a new thread about it...
But anyway. I wanted to know something in regards to Osamu Tezuka's "Book of Human Insects", as Vertical Inc. calls it. (Human Metamorphosis in Japan.)
Specifically, what sort of questionable content does it contain?
I think I might have to explain a little more on this question. I'm a fan of Tezuka's works, but that doesn't mean that I want to get every work licensed. I didn't get Ayako for example as I wouldn't feel comfortable owning a book that contains scenes of incest, or anything else inside that could be highly controversial.
So I was wondering if Book of Human Insects had anything questionable or controversial in it, in a similar vein of Ayako.
Thank you.

I read the first five volumes of Iron Wok Jan and though it was mostly just typical shonen stuff I liked it well enough, mostly becaused of the cooking theme and Jan being such a massive prick. But I have to ask, does the series go anywhere from here or is it just more of the same for 22 volumes (plus the sequel)?
And perhaps even more importantly, does the author ever develop even a decent grasp of the female anatomy?

Bigger competitions, better opponents and food that becomes progressivily more extreme. That's pretty much it. I mean, it's very entertaining, but I think it's a 'borrow' rather than 'buy' kind of series, since it's not exactly made for rereads. Well, unless you've got shelve space and can get a good deal on the other volumes. That's pretty much my excuse for owning the series

Nope. It actually gets worse. By the end of the series, it looks like Kiriko put two melons under her uniform. Not the Galia melons she has in volume 5. Watermelons.

Thanks. I just read the House of 1000 Manga entry too and I guess I'll stick with it for at least a couple more volumes to see if the insanity is enough to sustain my interest.

You're not really going to be able to be provided with "evidence", for the most part, since most sources are in Japanese and/or tucked away in the back of artbooks.
First off, though, you have to define "by hand" and "help of a computer." Because you can do work on a computer by hand.
Many artists make at least some of the art the "old-fashioned" way, with pencil or other media on paper. Watercolor, pastels, etc. are often used for color images, and basic manga panels are sketched out.
What I'd assume most do, though, is that after getting their raw sketches done, they take it to the computer and use a tablet to clean up the art. With the technology that's available, there's not a whole lot of difference between drawing pencil on paper and pen on tablet, and it allows for much easier clean-up of art.
After the drawings are done, I know that at least American artists have taken to doing much of their shading and tones digitally, simply because it's easier than cutting out the right shape from a sheet of screentone (I, thankfully, have never had to deal with this material, but I have heard horror stories about it).
Remember, also, that most mangaka have plenty of assistants, who are going to be working on the above two steps (cleaning up and refining the art, and doing the shading/toning). It would be much easier to pass around the work for tasks and checking if they were digital files.
Again, I don't have evidence, I'm going off of various interviews and artbook notes I've seen through the years, both from American comic artists and Japanese mangaka (the side-bars in manga are quite informative), as well as my own experience as an artist. I don't think there's anything that "every" manga does, because each artist has their own preferences on how to go about it.

Any recent news on more School Rumble being released? It seems like (whatever company it was) got the license forever ago.

It's not listed on the Kodansha comics website, so it's safe to assume that it's on hiatus/discontinued in the US. Whichever volume Del Rey last published will be the most recent one available.

i have read this this on news :
"The January issue of Media Factory's literary magazine Da Vinci published its 12th annual "Book of the Year" chart and related lists on Tuesday. A group of 4,986 "book lovers," including professional book reviewers, bookstore employees, and Da Vinci readers, selected this year's lists. Just as in last year, Eiichiro Oda received double the number of votes as the #2 male manga creator. Chica Umino topped the list of favorite female manga creator for the third year in a row. "
i did'nt understand this :
wha's media factury literary ? . .. da vinci ; is it a magazine or what ?
and if it is ; is da vinci publishe books ?
what's "book of the year " ???
sorry for my bad english and thank you

A literary magazine. Da Vinci is a magazine about literature.
Quote: | and if it is ; is da vinci publishe books ? |
Da Vinci is the magazine. It's a Japanese magazine. Media Factory is the publisher.
Media Factory also publishes manga. It has three manga magazines. They published Twin Spica and other manga series.
Quote: | what's "book of the year " ??? |
The favourite book of that year. They used a voting system to choose it.

In this case, 'book of the year' is the name of a special that consists of lists of favourites chosen by 'book lovers'. ANN posted the list of authors, but I'm pretty sure there are other lists as well, including one that is topped by the actual book of the year.
