I've heard good things about the game, so I'm looking forward to seeing it in anime form. The director looks promising, and the series composition writer isn't bad, but the character designer doesn't make me think this will be among A-1's best animated productions, though the PV doesn't look bad. The story is what interests me most anyhow.

No idea where this positive feedback for the director is coming from as he's still very much unproven in the big chair. While From the New World was solid, it could have been the strength of the source material that shone through. I've seen Garakowa and was not impressed in the least. I don't think there's anything else that he has been the director of other than individual episodes or OP animations.

If anybody is going to get it'll most likely be Aniplex. They licensed Persona 4 The Golden Animation, the Persona 5 special episode, and almost all the time they license very popular and high profile shows made by Ufotable, Shaft, Trigger and A-1 Pictures. Persona 5 is arguably one of the greatest games that have ever came so that alone makes this high profile. I'm not the biggest fan of Aniplex but I wouldn't mind if they end up getting and put it on CR because I know if Sentai gets it'll be put behind a double-pay wall. |

While it is reasonable to find Ishihama to be relatively inexperienced in the (series) director's chair, and from a writing perspective, From the New World's strengths may have been due to the source material, I think you don't give Ishihama enough credit in terms of the visual side of direction, given that From the New World was adapted from a novel. He may have directed a good deal of OPs in recent years, but they are some of the most well regarded in terms of direction. In light of that, I think it is not unreasonable for some of us to be optimistic, just as much as it is for you to disagree. |

To this day I haven't seen From the New World, so I can't comment on how much of the adaptation as presented was on Masashi Ishihama (especially since I have no idea what how you felt on the anime or what part of it left left whatever kind of impression it had on you). But what I can do is point to Kevin Cirugeda's article on Ishihama's style and approach to animating and directing that was posted here on ANN nearly two years ago if you want an in-depth look of what he supposedly contributed to the adaptation (emphasis on "supposedly" since again, never saw the anime. I just trust the writer to be informative about this kind of thing). |

You can say that, much like Persona 5 and other super lenghty visual novels(-ish, in Persona's case) works are said to be impossible to adapt overall (Persona 5 for a particurlarly different reason regarding its unique storytelling presentation, lore crafting (this time around, unlike the Jungian lessons that were completely skipped from Persona 4's adaptation without hurting the plot, this one is profoundly involved into the true plot, and therefore have to be presented somehow) and enourmous significant (meaning even "filler"-ish scenes may have essential information and subtle foreshadowing) lenght of the whole thing in a day-by-day in-game basis), that was the case in forever when it comes to a book like Shinsekai Yori (for many of those exact reasons, except even worse, in book format, meaning even adapting visually the outstandingly atmospheric setting would be a difficult job). This guy did justice to a "Lord of the Rings" sized book in 25 episodes without missing most of the essential stuff (although not everything was perfect, it was still what I would honestly consider an anime masterpiece) and giving it nearly the very same magical essence of the original work even in the most suspenseful moments. Everybody always fear some works wouldn't ever be done justice just like it, and Persona 5 is no exception besides being probably the better paced Persona game ever made. This guy being the director means a world of bless for many passionate fans including myself. Then again, it depends on the scriptwriter whether the whole thing will be properly adjusted to his plans as a director (but considering he was responsible for some of the better presented and well done JoJo episodes to date, and that said franchise was mostly adapted at a very fast pace without feeling actually rushed (which could work with Persona 5 pretty nicely), this adaptation has the potential to be an exceptional anime, as the game is one of the best JRPGs even in decades by story standards alone (I would be very excited to see how would they adapt the fantastic gameplay too btw, P4's adaptation was luckluster in that front, and so were P3's movies). Now we just wait and hope for it to be at least 2-cour, or preferentially 3-cour (4-cour may be overdoing it considering how Shinichi Inotsume deal with the pacing of the stuff he adapts into script and P5's pacing per se, and that's considering even the enormous lenght of this game in particular). |
