Well deserved success. Hopefully when Sonic 3 is released, part of that film will be set in Tokyo. I could see Amy Rose living there in Paramount's Sonic universe for some reason.

It'll be nice if there's a scene taking place in Japan to pay homage to Sonic's country of origin but I don't think it'll happen since Sonic is not that popular there, he was originally designed to appeal to the Western market.
Amy would be a nice addition to the cast though it seems the third movie will adapt the Sonic Adventure's 2 story considering spoiler[Shadow's appearance at the end of the second movie], but they could still remove Amy and Rogue from the plot, Sonic 2 was kind of an adaptation of the second and third games, and they do not follow the plot of the games that closely.

It’s one of Paramount’s major bright spots. Although given how varied Sega’s portfolio is, I don’t see the same level of success with other Sega properties. That and could you really see Sega greenlighting a Persona movie?

Still, think about how Sonic was received from the original trailer to now. This franchise really punched above its weight at the box office.

Sonic is extremely popular in Japan; at one point was voted Japan's 10th most popular video game character by Famitsu. Also Sonic was originally designed to appeal to multiple markets; his marketing and localization in Japan is different from America's. Please note that there has been several Sonic anime projects, plus Sonic 2006 was "Sonic as Final Fantasy" (complete with Elise being an Aerith ripoff) and the upcoming entry is already being called "Sonic: Breath of the Wild." While Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda are both certainly also popular in the U.S., note that there titles as popular or more so in the U.S. to be "influenced" by.

Sonic going to Tokyo would make a ton of sense. It would increase Japanese box office, which was terrible for the first installment. (Can't blame them: it was mostly a 90s style family/buddy/road trip comedy.) It could also be a fun diversion, as the trips to Siberia and (though they are part of the U.S.) San Francisco, Seattle and Hawaii were for the first two.

Also addding Amy Rose and Rogue would be a logical narrative progression.
Movie 1: kid Sonic gets a family.
Movie 2: older-but-still-a-kid Sonic gets friends.
Movie 3: Sonic - finally a teenager like he is in the games - experiences relationships with girls for the first time. Granted canon Sonic - to the extent that it exists - generally has little interest in Amy and Knuckles/Rogue never advances beyond flirting (Tails is the one of the trio depicted as being the most interested in girls) but hey the movies haven't followed those anyway.

Yeah, Paramount has had a lot of problems recently and Sonic 2 is actually their first major in a long time. Don't know if they want to continue working with SEGA, I think there's a Streets of Rage movie in development. Don't think if Persona is well suited for a live-action adaptation, Atlus should stick working in anime adaptations. A Golden Axe movie could work though.

A part of me wishes to know how the movie would have been received if they kept Sonic's original design, I recently watched the first movie, it's still a decent movie, there's some good action and comedy, the characters are likable but I wonder if people would have accepted the realistic looking Sonic, but I'm glad they listened to fans and changed it. I also wonder if an animated movie would've considered by SEGA and Paramount at some point.

He has his niche there, though. I went to a SEGA arcade in Tokyo two years ago (before the whole chain was rebranded as GIGO) and Sonic was a plush in the claw machines there. He wasn't really as prominent as Pokémon or Mario though.

I never seen that Famitsu Top 10 but at the end of last year Famitsu made a Top 100 of the greatest games chosen by over 50,000 readers and there wasn't a single Sonic game, actually the only "SEGA" games on the list were Persona 3, 4 and 5/5R, on the other hand there were 12 Mario and 8 Zelda games on the list, with Breath of the Wild being the number one game on the list.
I know that the Sonic OVA that came in the mid 90s was an attempt by SEGA to make a Sonic anime but it didn't sell well and from what I heard Sonic X season 3 wasn't even shown in Japan, it was made exclusively for the western market at the request of 4Kids and it didn't aired in Japan until 2020 when the Sonic movie premiered there.

Aerith is known for being killed in FF7 whereas Elise is known for kissing Sonic which was considered not a good thing by many fans there’s also their backgrounds which are completely different. This is on top of the fact that 2006 as far as I know at no point was ever considered during it’s development phase to be an RPG like FF.

By whom Japanese or English speaking fans? cause that literally sounds like something you’d see happen amongst the latter and not the former.

No it wouldn’t. Unless they’re going to go Tokyo to meet Espio in this universe whose supposed to be a ninja Sonic going to Tokyo for extended period let alone Japan would be hella weird with no context.

…..Sonic in the video games canonically is a perpetual bachelor as are the other characters and the only people that would care about this are the people who either followed the Archie comics or have been on the shipping wagon for the last 2 or so decades.
