At least for Life 1, I imagine that the length makes Kodansha hesitate (plus the fact that, even if they were to just re-use TokyoPop's translation, they'd still have to translate everything beyond Volume 9 from scratch), due to the rule of diminshing returns (i.e. later volumes always sell less than earlier volumes). Also, Kodansha has tons of digital-only manga releases, with only the ones that actually sold well eventually getting physical releases, so this isn't all that surprising.

Seems like a pretty big tonal jump for Life 2.

They could just do two in one releases!

Oh, dang! I've been hoping for a license rescue for Life for ages. I guess digital-only was probably inevitable, though. Wonder if there's any chance of my library getting it…

Two-in-one or no, it's a big investment for a 20-year-old shoujo manga that never got an anime.

YES on Life, a bona fide masterpiece! With this manga Keiko Suenobu absolutely captures what the world of high school life is like in the worst yet most honest way imaginable--it really is poetic art. I still have my incomplete Tokyopop collection when I normally get rid of any series whose publications never finish (including the dog-lovers' favorite Inubaka, unfortunately), and I can only guess I got the faithful ending from the live-action drama which was damn good in its own way. I would totally support a physical release for this, and I believe this series to be timeless enough for it to be at least possible, but we're just going to have to wait and see, aren't we?

Can anyone tell me exactly how Life 2 is connected to the first?

It's a completely separate series with no connection to the first.
