Did the Black Clover movie really not even open in the top 10 this weekend? I mean I'm happy to see it be in top 10 most watched on Netflix but God I was still hoping for it to track a LITTLE. Guess my assumption about Japanese fans using VPNs or something to watch it on Netflix instead was my correct assumption.

I mean...as for the Mario movie... it's out on DVD so...why would you watch it in Theaters when you can just buy it for $20 instead of paying for a ticket? I have a Japanese PSN account, a Japanese Amazon account; and various Chinese website accounts. It would not be unheard of for people in Japan to have foreign accounts to have access to the DVD/Blu version to skip the theater.

Huh, definitely did not expect Mario to still be behind Detective Conan at this point.

Nothing surprising, actually — Conan movies are that strong for years to the point that only a couple of chosen Western animated movies can beat them at the domestic market.

As far as I can tell it isn’t out on home release in Japan like it is in other parts of the world. Not to mention in this era of streaming who would pay 20 dollars for a DVD when you can rent or buy a movie for cheaper or just stream it for free unless it’s apart of some premium setup even watching the movie in theaters would be cheaper.

All things considered, Mario's performance in Japan is pretty good for a non-Disney animated feature and in terms of worldwide performance Japan is the second biggest market for the movie, behind the U.S. but above México.
It's actually kind of impressive how well the Mario movie did at the global box-office, there's a big chance that Mario will end up being the highest grossing film of the year and perhaps the only one that crossed the billion dollar mark, the only other movie that maybe can reach a billion this year is the new Mission Impossible. Honestly this year has been very dissapointing in terms of box-office revenue, franchises that once were very profitable like Fast & Furious and Transformers are in decline, Warner Bros. is losing millions with Shazam 2 and The Flash and Pixar is having their biggest loss with Elemental.

I don't think its as common as it use to be, but there are people that just really enjoy watching a movie at a movie Theater. They enjoy the experience of seeing the film in a theater. I have a good friend that goes to a lot of movies because he really enjoys watching movies in the theater. He also has a nice home theater set up but still enjoys seeing films at the movies.

But by your logic, those people would have already watched it. Those of us who are not going to pay $15 a piece to go sit in a theater with a bunch of other morons around us ruining the movie for us as they talk on their phones in front of us, kicking our seats, having sticky floors, are not going to pay for that. We'll pay $20 for a permanent copy even if we have to wait a few months.

This news article isn't about "who likes movie theaters" but about the fact that it's dropped. Of course, it has: it's available for purchase now. I can buy things in Japan on Amazon.jp right now. People in Japan can buy things on Amazon in the US right now. VPNS also exist. With pirating, full dvd/bluray rips also exist.

It's $20 on Amazon for a permanent copy; go look. The 4k perminant copy is $30 physical. The digital copy is currently $20 as it just released.

Not everyone cares about theater's "premium set-up" as in people standing up in front of you, your seat being kicked, being on their phone, paying $5 for a bottle of water, and (me personally) ending up with a migraine after every movie I ever watched in theaters (people with medical issues can't go to theaters easily).

In the US, you can go to Amazon.jp right now to buy things; they can do the same thing as we can and buy things here in the US; VPNS exist. Pirating also exists (rips of blus and DVDs).

If it’s on Amazon and only Amazon that means it’s not widely available like home releases have traditionally been which in turn renders your original point somewhat moot. Not everyone shops on or has a subscription to Amazon Prime Video. So why is anyone that does neitherI looking there?

Which again is still more than anyone who paid to watch the movie in theaters either by themselves or with a second person. And more than if you’re watching the movie on a streaming service.

And unless you’re a visualphile who needs to watch things in the highest resolution possible you don’t need to pay 30 dollars for that.

Irony.

Yes it’s true that not everyone cares about the experience of watching a movie in theaters for whatever reason there may be. But at the same time there are people other than yourself who do and aren’t going to wonder with amazement why anyone would.

…..You do know that not every person has access to the internet let alone knows how to use VPN right and if you have to jump through all those hoops to watch one movie that’s not really better?

It’s weird you go from mentioning getting the 4K version of the movie to mentioning rips that are very likely going to be in sub-par quality.

What point were you trying to make again?

Do we have any box office numbers for the Sailor Moon Cosmos movie yet? I haven’t heard yet how well that is performing.
