Hmm, sounds cool to me. Surprised it isn't at Toei, though.

Toei is more flexible with outsourcing their IP to other studios nowadays. I guess they don't want this to affect the main anime since the staff is very busy. The specials in the past affected the anime quite a bit.

Just because Toei makes the One Piece anime, that doesn't mean that anything Eiichiro Oda ever made is now automatically Toei's too. Monsters is its own IP that Oda owns, so I imagine E&H production came to Oda (or, at the very least, Shueisha) & proposed adapting it to anime, or vice versa, and since there was already the One Piece Day festivities, Shueisha decided to announce it there. I mean, Toei's name isn't even included anywhere in the copyright of the promotional poster or announcement, only Oda & Shueisha.

This is just like how Toei being behind the Dragon Ball & Dr. Slump anime didn't mean that they also inherently "owned" Sand Land, which is also being adapted into anime by a completely different studio.

The distinct difference here is that this essentially acts as a prequel/spinoff to one piece, as the MC reappears later in the series making this canon to the timeline. Not too strange to assume Toei would be involved in some way. You used examples of this to further illustrate this point: Dr Slump and Dragon Ball, which had a similar situation and both were handled by Toei.

Was it ever actually stated anywhere that Oda has retroactively made Monsters a literal prequel to One Piece, or was it simply that he repurposed the main character of that one-shot for OP? That's like trying to argue that Butsu Zone is a prequel to Shaman King, simply because there are repurposed characters from that in Shaman King's story. Sometimes, mangaka just like to call back to their older works & re-utilize them in their current work, but that doesn't automatically mean that they're related. Sure, some will go all in & retroactively make the older work canon to the later work's world, but sometimes it's just for the fun of it & doesn't need to be thought of as any deeper than that.

Also, as I stated, Toei isn't listed anywhere currently in the teaser trailer, the promotional poster, or even the key art being shown for Monster. If Toei was involved in any way, they'd already be mentioned in some way.

You completely missed my point here, which was that Toei had no say over Sand Land getting an anime simply because they made DB & Slump. That movie is getting made completely separate from Toei, because Toei doesn't have any automatic rights to it by way of making prior anime based on Toriyama's works. That's not how this stuff works.

It was literally confirmed by Oda himself that the MC of Monsters is one and the same person who later appears in One piece. For confirmation check Volume 47’s SBS. Monsters is officially canon to the OP universe so once again, it’s not absurd to immediately assume that Toei would have a hand in it. And you misunderstood what I was saying yourself. I said that Dragon Ball + Dr Slump are the only REAL comparable examples you presented that are similar to this case (as they had characters which later crossed over to the other title). And in that particular case Toei animated both of them thus, furthering the point. However, SandLand has no confirmed connections to ANY of Toriyama’s previous work and for all intents and purposes, it’s stand alone. So of course it wouldn’t be an issue if an entirely different studio decided to animate it. Simply put, the SandLand comparisons doesn’t work here. This isn’t a case of people assuming that only one studio can handle anything related to a particular mangaka and their work (which is silly). This is a case of a piece of work, which is related to an IP owned by Toei being outsourced to another studio.

OK, fair enough. I didn't know that, & ANN's article didn't directly clarify, as it only says that the lead "also appeared" in One Piece (which is really vague), so it's not something that just everybody is going to automatically know. Not everyone keeps up with every bit of One Piece lore, after all.

However...

True, but it's also not unheard of for stuff from the same overall & shared universe to be split up between different anime studios & production partners. Numerous shows have had seasons done by different studios, & things like spin-offs & side stories have been animated by different studios than the "main" series, as well. Also, my initial response was to Matros, who did automatically assume that Toei was involved, despite nothing in the reveal or report said so, and I was clarifying that we shouldn't just assume that E&H is doing it because Toei didn't want this to affect the OP anime's schedule because they're from the same creator (& overall world).

It could be that Toei was too busy, sure, but it's also just as likely that (as I said earlier) either E&H approached Oda & Shueisha, or E&H was approached to make it, due to the director's work on JJK. Since it's adapting the one-shot itself, likely to celebrate its 30th anniversary next year, I think Oda & Shueisha just thought it'd be neat to have it adapted & could simply let another team tackle it, without even considering what it'd mean for the One Piece anime.

Both Romance Dawn pilots were adapted so the one canonical one-shot had to follow at some point. A scene from it was already in Thriller Bark. Not of a fan of that arc, no sir. There is little to it as it is a failed pilot so I wouldn´t be surprised if at least half of whatever this will be is original. Wano failed to give Ryuma closure as Zoro visited his grave off-screen so I wonder if the anime will animate that at the end of Wano now that money is being invested in Ryuma.

Monsters got a motion comic a few years back btw.

Kind of cool seeing them go back and do one of Kubo's earliest works (I didn't know it was actually canon to One Piece).

Oda, not Kubo.....though looking at the above argument, there is the Burn the Witch anime to add to that since that is set in the Bleach universe.

I now fully expect the Ace novel/manga to get either an arc in the anime to create a gap with the manga as proper filer after Wano would lead to disaster. Or it will get let´s say 2 TV specials. I am pretty sure that the outline came from Oda and the broad plot or all of it is canon. Toei won´t leave money on the table. Never Toei.
