They also have two more sneak peak clips up of Death the Kid and Stein.

For those who haven't seen it, Todd Haberkorn as Kid is hilariously good. I laugh my ass off every time I watch it.

I bet FUNi never thought they'd have to give any of Eva 1.0 for free when they paid Gainax's ransom money for it. Laughing

GYAH! EVA DUB! DUBFECTIONIST ALARMS GOING OFF!!

Heh, it's not that terrible, but you could've warned me. Laughing Also, this is the first eight minutes, not nine.

It's been a while, did Rei appear and disappear randomly on the street with birds fluttering in the TV series? I don't remember that happening, but as I said, it's been about 4 years since I last saw Evangelion.

Overall, though, it's pretty familiar territory, though with a gorgeous upgrade in animation. These first 8 minutes don't exactly rebut the allegation that this is an unnecessary remake, although the faster pace is nice and bodes well for the future. I'd love to hear the original Japanese cast, but I guess that will have to wait for the DVD rental. Sad

Misato: You do know what your father does, right?
Viewer: Treat his kid like crap, screw a lot of women, and spoiler[destroy the world]!

Ah, memories. Very Happy

Yeah, though I think they added that extreme close-up of her eye.

Wait, did they redo the dub for Eva, or just simply used the audio track from before?

There are some actors that are from the ADV dub, but this whole dub is new. They couldn't have used the same audio track as before because it wouldn't match up. This is for the 1.0 movie, not for the series.

I still dislike Spike Spencer as Shinji Ikari. He makes the kid sound a little obnoxious, where he should just sound weak and feminine. But I admit he does sound like he's marginally improved.

Allison Keith is also a tad better, but still no Kotono Mitsuishi. She sounds a little weathered, actually.

Ritsuko's voice, however, is just plain awful. Gendo and Fuyutski's voices are passable, at least.

If I remember correctly, the Eva movies are different (and yet the same.) They changed things that would allow the TV series to fit better in a movie format. Right Stuf sent my copy a week ago. The end of the first movie reveals many things that was in the end of the TV series. The second movie is supposed to add more stuff that was not in the TV series. The animation looks great for its age.

Thanks, I haven't seen Eva in years so it sounds the same to me.

My guess is you have different directors working with the actors as well, which will alter the dub.

For me, the dub audio on the main voices didn't seem to be well blended into the other sounds. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's like they didn't match the sound effects... maybe it's just my imagination, but I know, for example, that I didn't get that feeling off of "Ponyo."

One important thing that this clip doesn't have is Rei. Of all the performances I heard when I saw 1.0 in the theater, Brina Palencia's as the one that struck me the most. Very different interpretation of the character, and honestly one I prefer.

I actually have to agree with that. Dubfectionist that I am, I think Rei was by far the best performance in the TV series' dub. The rest varied from decent to barely tolerable, though I always tend to blame directors rather than actors for a sub-par performance. (par = the original Japanese actor)

Shame they didn't bother to put subbed eps up for Soul Eater when they first licensed it. Left it abit late now unless people are new to the series and/or want to sample before purchasing.
Dub doesn't really impress me. I won't go into too much detail but it just seems a by the numbers rush job, although I do like the Death The Kid VA's performance and Soul sort of grows on you with time.
Either way, will be waiting for a Blu-ray release for the series.
No point buying many FUNi DVD sets these days as you'll just get burnt and have to double dip when they release a Blu-ray set further down the line. Just annoying that they don't release DVD and Blu-ray sets at the same time, especially for a high profile series like this.

When I saw the movie in theaters I just about lost it when I heard her new dub voice (she's one of my favorite Eva characters). Kensuke's is also completely off, I wish Greg Ayers had been able to keep his role as Kaworu.

I'm excited about seeing Soul Eater. I haven't seen it yet but the art direction looks too cool to pass up.

I always enjoyed the original Evangelion dub. I have heard many criticisms of certain over-the-top deliveries or bad acting by voice actors, but there is a certain nostalgia to the original cast that I cannot neglect.
Having said this about the original, I earnestly want to give 1.0 a chance, but the eight-minute Evangelion clip did not overly impress me. While it is wonderful to hear Spike Spencer and Allison Keith again, I do miss Tristan MacAvery as Gendou and Sue Ulu as Ritsuko. John Swasey does not quite have the command and power MacAvery had as Gendou; his voice has yet to adequately express how despicable Gendou is. Colleen Clinkenbeard's Ritsuko is too gruff.
I had no doubt about purchasing the DVD, but as of now I believe I will wait. The animation is truly newer and more pristine, but aesthetic quality is not cause enough for money to be spent.
