The "Best Animated Feature-Independent" Annie Award is somewhat of a mixed blessing; on one hand, it'll make it a lot easier for a Japanese animated film to win a lot more often than before, when they were competing directly against Pixar, Disney, and Dreamworks, on the other hand, this kind of ghetto-izes anime and other international animated features and may make it less likely that they'll be nominated in the main Best Animated Feature category, and don't think that the Annie Best Animated Feature category isn't at least somewhat of a bellweather for what will be nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar.

Not to be cynical, but perhaps this is a prudent compromise of sorts. The relevant establishments can be seen to laud international works without thereby placing the Ones That Are Supposed To Win under any jeopardy.

I'm surprised this article doesn't mention that Isao Takahata is getting a lifetime achievement award. That seems like something worth noting to me.

Kinda like when the Oscars created the Best Animated Feature when Beauty and the Beast didn't win Best Picture? Smile

^ It took a decade after Beauty and the Beast's nomination for "Best Animated Feature" to be a category. The semi-serious rumour/joke at the time was that the category was made just to keep Shrek out of the Best Picture field.
