Laughing Under the Clouds/Donten ni Warau Side Story Manga Gets Anime

Original supernatural manga inspired 2014 TV anime

The official website for the television anime of Kemuri Karakara's Donten ni Warau (Laughing Under the Clouds) manga announced on Monday that an anime adaptation of the Donten ni Warau Gaiden (Laughing Under the Clouds - Side Story) spinoff manga has been green-lit. The spinoff manga's third and final volume (cover seen right) will have more information on Tuesday.

Karakara launched Donten ni Warau Gaiden on Mag Garden's "Beat's" manga site in 2014 after running the original Donten ni Warau manga in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Avarus magazine from 2011-2013. It ended on February 3.

The manga includes stories not told in the original manga, including some from the past and some from the future. The original manga's story takes place in the 11th year of the Meiji era, when the number of people in Japan who feel dissatisfaction toward the government are increasing due to the increasing speed of Westernization and the ban on samurai. In order to curb the increased rate of crime, the government opens a new prison. The three brothers of the Kumo family are entrusted with the duty of transporting these criminals to the new prison, but adventures await them on the way.

The original Laughing Under the Clouds manga inspired a 12-episode television anime in 2014. Funimation streamed the series as it aired with both English subtitles and an English broadcast dub, one of two shows that debuted its broadcast dubbing strategy. The manga has also inspired several stage plays and an upcoming live-action film opening in February 2018.

Karakara launched the ongoing Rengoku ni Warau (Laughing in Purgatory) prequel manga in Monthly Comic Garden in January 2014. The manga's sixth compiled book volume will ship on Tuesday.
