I'm not sure I quite understood what part of the story this spin-off covers. I cannot really imagine it covering things which would be relevant to the main story line but not essential to it. Can anybody who has read the manga explain what it is about?

Haven't read it myself, but i've seen other sites summarize it as stories of what happened while Satoru was in the coma.

I only read a single chapter but based on that it is centered on Kayo and takes place during the long period between Satoru's near drowning and him waking up in the hospital 15 years later.

So it ran for a whole volume? What's the point really.

Maybe people were curious as to what Kayo was doing between those times.Or how she ended up with Hiromi.

I know I'm curious. I loved Erased, despite the naysayers, and Kayo's story was particularly well done.

This is wrong. Each chapter focuses on a different character.

Well neither point was addressed in the manga.

On it being one volume, remember that monthly manga chapters tend to be between 25-50 pages. Also, sometimes other manga side stories/spin-offs/prequels/sequels last only 1-3 volumes.
