Fate/Extra: Last Encore is game adaptation, it is the weirdest game adaptation ever as it's basically rewriting the game story and not really like the game Fate/Extra at all. It doesn't help that it's not complete right now.
Giving this anime a grade lower than Studio DEEN's Fate/Stay Night is a bit much though. It's not nearly as divisive as the original Fate/Stay Night adaptation. And Shaft is definitely going to change a lot when it comes to the visuals on blu-ray, they've done it before. Still, this is the first time I've ever seen Fate/Extra's visuals being referred to as pretentious more than Kinoko Nasu's tendency to word vomit exposition everywhere. The fifth floor was a farce. |

I thought Apocrypha was a bad Fate show but that opinion didn't last long when I watched F/E. Atleast Apocrypha had good production values to make it watchable.

I never finished nor cared for the original FSN, only watched FA and FELE because I play FGO I'd like to see how my favorite Servants are handled in these adaptations. And I thought FA was bad, at least it had moments.
FELE barely explains anything, turns into a generic monster of the week, the action is subpar at best, Hakuno is boring and Nero is just Saber but fanservice. Shame because I actually like her in FGO. But the songs are pretty good and the animation is gorgeous. At least it didn't turn into another Nero wank fest (yet?) like Extella and Septem. |

It's about as much of a spoiler as knowing who Archer is in FSN.. so cat's pretty much out of the bag at this point.. but I digress So I started watching this latest example of Fate/Dead horse.. after ANN pretty much soundly trashed it.. and just because whenever this site trashes something.. its usually the opposite and it proved me right again. As what was mentioned previously this is a spinoff set in the alternative nasuverse of the Moon Cell. The only things that really carry over are the standard rules of Master/Servant, everything else is different. So confusing.. yes if you haven't played either Fate/Extra or its sequel CCC. Fate/Extra does have a US release.. CCC never was ported over. All in all from what I have seen so far Last Encore was pretty good. Since I just started watching Apocrypha I can't compare one to the other. Worth checking out.. won't make much sense without a basic understanding of Fate/Extra. |

Apocrypha was messy from a story standpoint but still had so many other merits about it that makes it much better than Last Encore. |

I get what you're going for here but when the character's name is on the ANN page for the show as well as multiple articles on this website, the Type-Moon wiki page, the regular wiki page, an almost ten year old PSP game that this show definitely assumes you've played before watching it at all, and an annual event in a wildly popular mobile game the ship has definitely sailed. |

I'm going to have to disagree on that. I like Cassandra Lee Morris, but she didn't sound right as Nero to me. She made her sound too...childish? I think that's the best way to describe it. All I heard was Morgana from Persona 5 (which is almost never a good thing) |

One of those shows that ends up being on the upper end of "OK" - looks great, Saber is great, but the bimonthly story of woe / motivational speech structure ends up feeling very "been there done that".
If anything, I wouldn't mind if the show was more confusing - I don't know that I really agree that the how and why of everyone being here is all that confusing, but ultimately I don't think it's the thing that hurts this show so much as the lack of narrative bite with the actual characters. I did kind of like what they did with the protag, though. "My heart is full of hatred and loathing..." |

I have no idea why anyone would say this. Last Encore obviously wants you to have played the original PSP game, and I cannot imagine what anyone who hasn't could get out of it. The individual arcs are more or less interesting as "what-if" codas to the various opponents from the game, but Last Encore doesn't seem to have much ambition beyond that. The fifth floor didn't even go that far; it was basically a pure retread of events that already happened in the game. It would be nice if the final episodes manage to tie it all together into something compelling, but I'm not holding my breath. As it is, the only Extra I can wholeheartedly recommend to anyone is CCC. |

I just checked out the translation on the Netflix English sub and dub, and I cannot believe how poor it is. The script displays an obsession with replicating the structure of the Japanese and matching the length of each line with absolutely no regard for creating natural or intelligible English dialogue. Every line of the Japanese script is so much more transparent in terms of meaning that it's almost comical. I actually like most of the English dub performances, but the script they're stuck with makes them sound like weird robots who obscure their every statement by using twice as many words as they should.
On top of that, there are a bunch of basic errors ("conscience" instead of "consciousness," for example), that make me question the ability of the translation and editing team. I remember the Kara no Kyoukai movies having a lot of similar problems with their English scripts. The result is that I can't recommend either to anyone who can't understand the Japanese. |

Can you provide a couple of specific examples of this? I watched most of the English dub with the subtitles on and didn't see anything as dramatically out of line as what you're describing between the English dub and the subs. Or are you saying that the subs are also that far off? |

Isn't Nero kinda meant to seem "childish"? I mean in Japan they choose Sakura Tange who is very well known for voicing children. she's a very upbeat & different Saber. I thought this Saber and Cassandra Lee Morris was the best part of the show, otherwise I didn't care for it that much. |
