Nah, I still hear it like Darth Vader. Wink

They've done reviews of pretty sexually-explicit manga and anime before in recent years (Berserk, a ton of BL stuff), but so long as there is actual story that can be fairly reviewed along with the naughty bits, I don't see why Queen's Blade can't be included. I think Theron covered the story very well -- enough for me to realize that it's not even remotely enough to get me to watch the series.

That's good to hear. I still must admit that reading the review left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Using female character's attractiveness-including the "full figured Egyptian look" line, which I wouldn't call very classy-as a measure of a show's quality was kind of offputting and diverged frighteningly from the typical tone of the site.

Um, huh? You haven't been reading reviews on this site for long, have you? We've done this in reviews for ages now. Besides, how else can one accurately describe a series like this without dwelling on the attractiveness of the scantily-clad female warriors, which is the main point of the show? (Even though a real story does develop, it never moves too far away from this?)

And about saying Menace has a "full figured Egyptian look" not being very classy, let's consider a picture of the character, shall we? (This is, I believe, taken from one of the original game books, but her design in the anime is the same):

Menace pic (borderline NSFW)

Generous curves? Check.
Distinct Egyptian motif in her apparel, hairdo, and slightly dusky skin tone? Check.
She's first encountered inside a pyramid in a desert area that was once a mighty kingdom? Check.

How is "full figured Egyptian look" in the slightest tasteless here? It's utterly accurate.

Really, Raneth, if this review left a bad taste in your mouth, then this series was clearly not aimed at you.

At the risk of belaboring my point, that's exactly why I was confused that this show was reviewed at all-the entire point of the show seems to be to titillate the audience, and as such, the review focuses on how well it set out to do that. I feel like it was a tasteless review for a tasteless show. In my opinion, it was a waste of a review, and I expressed that I was glad that it would not get any worse than this.

Of course, I'm sure that there are those who do enjoy this show and appreciate the review. I've watched it myself (to make fun of it) and was surprised it was reviewed at all, much less taken seriously. Zach already explained the reasoning behind why the review was done and I accept it-but I stand by my opinion that it was not tastefully done, and whether or not it was tasteless by necessity seems irrelevant to me.

So we should skip reviewing shows just because some of the potential readers of the site might consider them "tasteless?"

But how would people know that they're "tasteless" if it wasn't for reviews like this?

To be perfectly honest, Queen's Blade is *right* on the edge of what I'll accept reviews for on this site. It's sold on the shelf in major retailers next to all the other anime and the content could easily be described as hard R, rather than X-rated.

The show has the usual "this isn't porn" pretense that hangs over it - same as Ikki Tousen - that somehow it's not *really* just about breasts - it's about some tournament or something and has a real story, something Theron has certainly argued for. So long as that pretense exists and the content isn't straight-up porn, I'm OK running a review of it.

I'm sorry, this is OT, but whenever you read Zac's posts, does anyone else read them in Skeletor's voice? It's like I can't see that av and read his posts and not wonder what it would sound like in Skeletor's voice.

Thanks to you I just did my best attempt of reading that post out loud in Skeletor's voice. That was incredibly entertaining, particularly considering the content of the post. Laughing

Given recent legislation, I wonder if shows like this will be made anymore. Some might not consider it a loss, but I think fanservice shows like Queen's Blade are harmless fun.

Of course you shouldn't skip reviewing tasteless shows. But typically if a show it tasteless I'd expect a reviewer to point it out in the review and condemn the anime for it, not completely embrace it.

...unless their Theron. He believes in judging anime based on the "for what it is" principle. "For a fanservice series," he considers Queen's Blade a B. Of course, I also think he grad-inflates a smidge, but that's why you need to read the actual review rather than just the grades. There is no rubric, so you just need to get to know the reviewer.

I half-disagree. While the reviewer should be aware of and point out if a show skirts the edges of conventional taste, he or she should ultimately state their own opinion of what they think of it, not condemn it because they think is somehow is the "right" thing to do. "Taste" is not necessarily always a matter of moral principle, it is simply what it is--a matter of taste.

I watched Queen's Blade with my husband and we both enjoyed it. Yes, there's lots of fanservice to the point it's borderline pornography. But it really does have a pretty decent storyline. Shakespeare it ain't, but not bad for a fanservice anime based on a video game.

Here's the thing, if I am in the market for an ecchi show how can I know what to buy if the reviewer is just giving blanket condemnation on every show that has large amounts of fanservice? You have to judge it by what it's trying to be, not on what it didn't even attempt.

Queen's Blade has decent animation with an emphasis on keeping the characters on-model something it does insanely well, the characters are always beautiful, the story is decent, the characters are interesting, and the show knows what it wants to be. That to me is a b grade, so in this way I agree with Key.

Actually it's based on "battle booklets", not a video game.

But yes I agree with you and Charred Knight.
Decent story, and fantastic animation. Smile

This show definitely surprised me. I started it mainly just for the scantily clad women, but it was the overall quality of the animation that really caught my eye. Admittedly, there isn't much choice to but to put a lot of effort into the animation on a show like this, but I'm not complaining. By the time I got to the end of the first season I genuinely wanted to see more just to see how things turn out. Hopefully, Media Blasters will release the second season at some point.

one character wears a maid outfit for no good reason

There actually is a reason, though it's not explained within the context of the story. It's actually a pun on Airi's 'battle name', Meido he izanaumono. I suppose that's probably her only real reason for existing, outside of being a QB replacement for the Wraith "Lost Worlds" battle-book.
