Downloading fansubs because not being able to afford DVDs sounds like a lame excuse to me. I have a large appetite for anime and can't afford to feed it. I have watched hundereds of episodes of anime over the last year and have purchesed very little licensed DVDs, nor do I download any anime, or buy bootlegs. I rent anime from one of the dozen or so online DVD rental companies. I pay about $39 a month for 5 DVDs at a time, and I go thru a 5 dvd cylce about every week. so about 20 DVDs a month. adverage 5 eps a DVD. 100 episodes a month. that comes out to less than $0.40 an episode, who can't afford that? Of corse anime that I fall in love with I eventualy buy, when I have the spare cash of corse, and usualy I wait untill there is a box set so my buck will stretch farther. And I always have the option of renting a DVD twice if I like it. Renting anime is a great and legal alternative to downloading fansubs as far as sampling anime to find out which ones are worth your money.

Now what if your too young to have a bank card or credit card that are required to start an online renting account? you can always join or start an anime club. I know some American anime companies like ADV support anime clubs by giving them free sample discs every month with trailers and pilot episodes of upcoming anime. again this is a great alternative for "sampling" anime, and its free!!!

Another little agument I have about DVDs being better than fansubs is quality. a lot of people say that the quality of subtitles are better on fansubs than the licensed release, but what about video and sound quality? A DVD will stomp on any fansub you can download when it comes to visual and audio. If you enjoy anime for it's art wouldn't that art look better on the TV in your living room and sound better thru a home entertainment system, than sitting in a desk chair 12" away from a monitor watching a compressed and converterd video file that has lost a few levels of quality from it original origin. now I know that some people have amazing computer set ups with larger monitors and 5.1 surround sound but if you can afford all that that I know the price of anime isn't an factor. And lets not forget the fun extras that most DVDs have. Cool

Edit: on a side note I know that a lot of people outside of North America download fansubs because they can't get anime anyother way where they live. This is a valid point IMO, I mean these people don't really have much other choice. other than traveling to some city/country that does have anime available, but that's not practical.

Yeah, the One Piece edits were sad, but with the substance use and abuse and violence that goes on in this title, edits should have been expected. It may have been a kids show in Japan, but those type of activities make it a teen show in the US using the ratings guidelines.

No one was expecting the show to go unedited. Even if FUNimation or Viz had gotten ahold of One Piece, I would have fully expected some of the drinking to be cut, as well as Sanji's smoking (neither of which I'd consider to be substance abuse-that definition might apply to Smoker's habit of smoking two cigars at once, though.) That's not why people are upset. 4Kids has made literally hundreds of edits that did not need to be made to meet S&P. They've cut out entire storylines that had no objectionable content. They've rewritten character motivations and backstories. They've changed character's personalities. They turned a whale into an iceberg, for crying out loud. Can you tell me what's so objectionable about a whale?

None of those things needed to be changed. From what I've heard (and keep in mind it might just be a rumor) the reason for the episode cuts (by my count, so far 25 episodes have either been combined with other eps or just left out completly) was because they wanted to get to the storyline which introduces Chopper as quickly as possible, because they see him as the most marketable character (I can almost hear one of their executives going "He's just like a Pokemon!") but that doesn't explain all the needless changes within the episodes themselves, and it doesn't justify the removal of the episodes to begin with.

Although I'm usually not too upset over edits, I have to admit that when I first saw One Piece on CN, I was surprised. To be honest with all of you fans, I'll be skeptical on how good the original anime is until I see an uncut version in the Japanese dub. It's just that the cut is SO bad, that I'm starting to think that the anime wasn't good to begin with. Now I love the manga, but the anime is going to haunt me until I see a better version of it.

Well, I'm sorry, but I don't think the heads at 4Kids are willing nor paitent enough to show all (what will probably be) 250+ episodes of One Piece. I'm sure that not all of these episodes are terribly important, so I wouldn't mind a couple cuts for the sake of speed. I mean, look at Yu-gi-oh, in which all but 3 episodes have been shown in entirety. That's 220 total in fourish years, and it's popularity has diminished. I know 4Kids wants to make this their "Evangelion" (in terms of milk production) but I don't think they're willing to sacrifice five or six years of programming space for it.

If anyone want's to see just what 4Kids edited, cut, and butchered out of One Piece, here you go:

This site is extremely detailed and up to date.

And here's a nice little editorial about this issue:

Interesting to know the manga to anime adaptation. The filler episodes in anime is a problem though. Take a look at Yu Yu Hakusho, when Yusuke is in his trial for coming back to life. There are so many filler chapters in the first two volumes it may not be interesting in the anime. (though I do like some of them... Yusuke and the little girl who was dead always wanting to play with him... some filler chapters like "The Old Dog and the boy" might not translate well to the show)

The One Piece editing is very, very, very tragic. I have to agree with them cutting so many episodes to speed up to Chopper. (anyone remember FUNimation merging episodes just to get to the Saiyans fighting?) The edits are damn stupid (changing guns to super-soakers, inserting stupid, lame, out of character dialogue) removing blood and censoring cigarettes I can understand, but thats not the main point. Having a good quality show, with top-notch voice actors, excellent transplation of the Japanese version, leaving in the original musical score and animation, while not OVER CENSORING SO MUCH is what we strive for. Unless 4Kids releases completely Unedited, Uncut, Unaltered DVDs with a re-dubbed cast, better accurate translation, original music, subbed track (nothing censored, nor any "dubtitles) with the Opening theme/Ending theme translated with the original animation and music, recaps, eye catchers, and previews, then 4Kids should just drop One Piece now. From what I heard, its not doing so well on Toonami or 4kids TV (used to be Foxbox), but who knows. 4Kids is full of crap!

Oh yeah, nice caption contest. I'll try to enter, though I'm not very funny. Very Happy

Is there a limit to how many captions one can submit per contest?

I've sent in my submission (with this same question,) but if I come up with anything else I'd like to be able to enter again (without disqualifying myself), cause winning FMP would be very cool.

I'd actually attribute the existence of ParaKiss more to the staggering popularity of Nana. Anything by that author is being scooped up and worked on. Being able to cover an entire series in 12 episodes since it's only 5 manga volumes made it an easy grab as well. Certainly, the US #'s didn't hurt but it's been a couple of years overall.

Nana is where it's all at now. Between its high rankings in the theater, the numerous merch opportunities and now the news of a sequel for next summer.... Yazawa continues to be hot in general.

I just love these new thinpaks from ADV, they're great!

If you think your comedy will beat my comedy, then we shill see. Because I have nothing to do for quite a while... I'll come up with lines after lines of comedic jokes till I win hours if not days to win. Btw thinpaks from ADV are great.

Okay, it's on. I'm directing this to you and anyone else who thinks they are funnier than me. I have a monkey who lives in the back of my brain. His name is Rodney. He is also invisible. His only purpoes is writing humor and watching porn. When I try to stop him from doing either he smacks against my spinal collum which causes me to both cry out in pain and urinate myself simultaneously. The point is is that Rodney can produce material ranging from Richard Pryors "Intellignet social satire" to Family Guy's "So stupid you can't help but laugh". So if any of you want a go, then just realize what you're up against.
So then why haven't I won one of these contests yet? I don't know. Zac's afraid of monkeys?

Because monkey's are only funny when you see what they do. Monkey's can't produce comedy in words without showing some action.

So they couldn't have just aired it at a twice-per-week rate? Not only that, but since they've reached Chopper all the merging madness has "suddenly" stopped, so obviously speed was never an issue.

And regardless of whether or not they wanted to do it to get through it quickly, cutting 21 episodes entirely and then trimming off 11 is simply unacceptable. Their misguided "Edited DVDs always outsell uncut DVDs!" mindset and refusal to release uncut DVDs for not only One Piece but ANY of their shows doesn't help much, either.

As for the person who defended 4Kids earlier in this topic, I sort of agree with you. I never expected all of the violence, all of the blood, all of the smoking, etc. in One Piece to come through intact. What I did expect was a dub with original music, good voice acting, and a script that was for the most part accurate to the original version. 4Kids didn't deliver.

And the fact that there are people who actually edit these things because they consider them to be "offensive" keeps me awake at night, fearing for humanity.
