the writter of this latest yaoi rant didn't say that he chose to watch it or whatever. he said he didn't like it when he stumbled upon it when he was searching for yuri. he didn't choose to watch it, just stumbled upon it. |

I have to agree with Joichi, for the most part. Although, I get annoyed with the amount of incest/rival/becausetheylookhottogether yaoi pairings of characters from my favorite shows, who am I to say which fantasies people can and can't indulge in? As long as they aren't doing anything dangerous or harmful to other people. (like in previous discussions, living out rape, pedophile etc. fantasies)
Although I don't really understand what's so sexy about alot of the above pairs. And I am kinda sad that the het fan base is alot smaller than the yaoi fanbase. |

When did this column become a sideshow display for every freak niche within the anime subculture? It used to consist of questions like "Why has X series been delayed?" or "Were there any more manga created by the author of Y?" Now it's a forum for anyone with an axe to grind to moan and wail about their little hot-button issue.
The "question" from the guy in Kuwait could have been another Rant of the Week had it been just a little longer. I'm honestly sick of this column being a mouthpiece for the fansub issue. You would think it was the central issue surrounding the entire fan community, which, God help us if it is. I don't blame Zac for this because I realize that he is just responding based on the mail he gets, and I have read enough of his columns to believe that he feels no need to defend himself. All of this week's questions-- fansubs, "supporting anime," bootleg merchandise and the nauseating yaoi debates-- are so tired by now, it drives me nuts that people are still asking them. My interest in the column has waned considerably, as I no longer look forward to hearing answers to questions about anime, but Zac having to shut down petulant whiners who keep beating the dead horses of the fan community. I'm not saying anyone can do anything about it; I'm just saying, this column ain't what it used to be, and I think the fans are mostly to blame. |

I don't understand why there would be a problem with yaoi vs. yuri or incest in the first place... they're just Bodies. We're all composed of the same particles, so who cares? It's such a small detail whether someone is male or female or has similar blood to someone else in an infinite universe...
(What kind of a reply was that...?) |

hence the old line " if she's got tits it isnt loli"(of course this is still a debate in the community) ed I dont know ed isnt shota looking thu IMHO. but then agien guys dont really have a definate look like a female(fully devoloped breasts and hips) I guess you could say "if he's got hair it isnt shota?" but that woudlnt work do to japanese censorship. |

Well, there are kinky fangirls (lol), but most Elricest fic involves Al getting his body back I assume. I don't like Elricest because it ruins the brotherly bond between the Ed and Al. They are so close, but then some fangirls says "OMG! They mus b n luv111one~1" I feel the yare the fangirls who don't get the show the most. Most of the show is about how far two brothers would go for one another, and about the connections you have with your family. I don't think Ed's shota. He's short, yes, but he acts like an adult. He also does happen to carry himself in a rather mature way. While it can go shota, I prefer it to not be. I don't even like the porn though, I'm just a fan of the boys kissing |

If people want more yuri, they're gonna have to write/draw it themselves... It has to start somewhere. As someone above said, the reason why there's more yaoi is because most fanfiction is written by women (Mind you, I seem to recall various polls showing that more slash fangirls are bisexual, including myself, and for some unknown reason we still like slash/yaoi better than femmeslash/yuri or het ).
And enemies will be paired together for as long as they continue to look hot together... It's all fantasy, after all Also, there is a certain fun in taking two characters who hate each other and making it believable that they'd get together. The only examples I know of that come from Harry Potter fandom, though... |

What I liked most about this week's coulmn was the reply about the Eva 10th Anniversary boxset. With all of the complaining that's gone into it by fans I've seen, it almost amazes me that the simple answer of "Don't buy it" escapes them.
While you are absolutely right about what is probably a market under-representation of yuri, when people start thinking and talking about the mental "psyches" or some other psychobabble concerning porn - my brain shuts off. Why there isn't more, I don't know. Maybe the psychobabble is onto something; I'm inclined to disagree just on principle. After all, everyone knows women are like Voltron - the more you hook up, the better it gets! |

is it just me.. or does Zac seem to be extra cranky this time around?
I can't believe the only letters you get are about fansubs (justfying them or not) and getting-into-the-industry questions. You said a few times you've stopped answering questions about series like Sailor Moon Stars because you've answered it one hundread times. Why not just stop answering the fansubs and industry questions? I know I'm sick of reading them. You haven't "answered" a anime question that I found interesting at all lately. The article is starting to get repetitive and boring. You're right, I don't have to read your article. But I use to enjoy doing so. Now I'm just like, "Meh, answer more then three questions about fansubs, industry and your hate." |

Dear Answerman, I'd like to start increasing the quantity of yuri anime and manga by breaking to the industry myself. I've written a few scripts, and this guy I talk to on the internet says he can draw girls really well. Who would I need to talk to about animating a pilot? Which publishing company do you think would be most interested in releasing a manga about two teenage girls who fight aliens from the future and fall in love with each other? |

i wrote the thing about eva, and i just wanted to say a little something, since i feel like I was torn to shreds by the response I got. I know I can just NOT buy the re-re-release, and eva is a special case, but i just want to support them, and feel like making my statement this way. Special case or not, the fact of the matter is supporting your anime, whether it has a large fanbase, or virtually non-existent. I think my message is similar to Zac's: just go and buy the stuff from the shows you want, and don't leech off the series without giving anything back.

Man, you guys are cranky. Last week everyone's on about how they enjoyed the column, this week it sucks because I answered more than one question about fansubs. How fickle you people can be. Next week is the 250th column so it won't be a standard Q&A format, but the week following that I'd planned on letting the fansub issue rest for a while. You have to understand that the column very specificially discusses hot button issues because that's what people like to discuss and the questions I get are largely in response to my opinion or the other questions in the column. Answerman operates almost as a series of discussions, where every week the discussion - be it about yaoi, fansubs or whatever - continues. That said, I'm as sick of talking about fansubs as apparently you are, so I'd planned on letting it rest for a while. I guarantee you it'll show up in the column again before too long, though; that's simply the nature of the beast. |
