Why not bears?
[I understand that "bear hunter" is something that has a lot of cultural resonances in japan, particularly in the north; bears are large and dangerous, and given japan's geography wilderness often comes quite close to populated areas. Most guns still in private hands are bear-hunter heirlooms, and stuff like that. So I'd expect it'd be tying into that cultural complex, and also to bear-as-cute-symbol/teddy-bear, because this is ikuhara and tensions between how people see themselves and how they present themselves are one of his things...]
