My dad used to do something similar to this all the time around his brother when he stopped drinking to “test him.” Not too uncommon. Judge the ethicacy of it I suppose but it’s sort of a “tough love” tactic.

And yes, looking at these pictures is extremely emotional. What a profound loss, not just for fans of Takahata’s work and the industry that he helped pioneer, but perhaps most of all for his close colleagues, family and friends. You can tell this is definitely going to color Miyzaki’s film even more with his feelings of mortality.
