On the one hand, I'm perfectly fan with a ban on outright pornography.
But I make an exception for tasteful artistic nudity.
That said, here's the problem - algorithms.
A.I. still to this day remains DUMB DUMB DUMB, and it always will be, much to the chagrin of our futuristic technocracy dreamers, and ESPECIALLY when it comes to judging art.
As such it's useful for sorting through the billions of content on a site, but at the end of the day, there needs to be a back'n'forth between artist and a human being on the other side with regards to what content is deemed questionable.
For the free speech crowd - there are alternatives where such content can be put in a nice place for those seeking it. The same for all the crap going on with Facebook, twitter etc.
Time people realized it's good to decentralize and not put all your eggs into one basket. And private businesses should have the right to make the call on where their moral boundaries lie, from Facebook, to Twitter, to TUMBLR, to private religious businesses who don't want to cater to certain groups of people.
If someone isn't catering to you, go elsewhere.

I feel bad for creators because they have noplace else to host their art (especially if they make nsfw art). Pixiv is extremely permissive... but you have to censor genitalia. HF doesn't allow interaction unless you have an account. DeviantArt is a mess. Twitter is good is way too ephemeral. Instagram is lousy with art thieves.
Tumblr was the last bastion for people whose career was to draw stuff, be it erotic or not. Now that's not an option for them anymore. It really sucks.
And that's before you get into how Tumblr was a great hub for the queer community. There was a lot of crap on tumblr, good god yes, but it was also a very positive place for a lot of people to express themselves--and make no mistake, those algorithims have it in for anything non-hetero. Just like when Steam decided Mutiny!! and Kindred Spirits weren't "acceptable".
Startups gonna startup, I guess. We'll never forget (the trash-fire that was) DashCon.

Yes this comment is off topic and I promise I will not reply if Incarnate tries to continue this discussion. But given how topical this is I couldn't just not say something. |
The entire discussion comparing the US to Egypt or other countries going on here is off topic. It can stop now from everyone.

It's not about the loss of database, it's about loss of followers. You can't expect everyone to follow all your socmeds, even if they did follow you again, there's no guarantee they'll interact with you the way they did on tumblr.
You can backup your art, but you can't backup your followers.

I think the best comment I've seen about this on Twitter went something like...
Everybody: Hey Tumblr, do you think you could do something about the porn spam bots and Nazi propaganda?
Tumblr: I would literally rather die.
It's a shame, but I've seen Tumblr's impending death coming ever since Yahoo acquired it. It was a terrible platform for holding any kind of discussion, anyway, so hopefully its eventual replacement will be better.
