At 40k followers I wouldn't assume the guy is a legit candidate and assuming that, I'm surprised ANN even heard about him or pays any attention (except for the laughs). Any idiot can say they are a Republican or Democrat or whatever, they don't necessarily represent the party. Best to ignore...

I keep thinking of Dana Carvey's Church Lady character from SNL here - "Could it be....Satan?!"

Of all the things that Florida is dealing with right now, focusing our attention on anime and plethora of anime porn that exists should not be high on that priority list. But hey, anything to distract our constituents from our inability to control the coronavirus and the Karens and Kens that refuse to wear masks, right?

Honestly, this sort of thing happens every few years. Someone will complain to their local politician about something they caught their child or grandkid looking at and will insist that politicians do something about it. I remember when the Kodomo no Jikan manga was released under the title Nymphet in the US that there was a sizeable outcry of parents demanding that the title be shelved because they believe it to be child porn. Usually, this sort of thing blows over when something new comes along and is determined to be a threat to the sanctity of (insert cause here).

Unfortunately you've got the story a bit mixed up, and yours sounds more favorable than what did happen to KnJ; it got shelved before release, and most of the backlash was from other people in the industry.

What kids are watching DBZ? Seriously, it's over 20 years old. I could understand Super, that just came out. Even then, I would assume 30-40 year olds.

Another thing to note is that aside from anime/manga, American comic books are not that much different when it comes to material that is not appropriate for kids. One clear example is showing outfits for female characters that have to be toned down for the media adaptions such as DC Comics' Wonder Woman or Starfire.

Course complaining of that is not as common compared to anime/manga.

Not so much lewd appearances, but I gave up more than a decade ago trying to read American comics because of the persistent big bulging muscle syndrome on the guys and Barbie syndrome on the girls. Is it any better nowadays?

I don't mind the movies so much, at least they look 'human'...

That may have been true in the past, but Marvel and DC have toned down that kind of content in their book for about 10 years now. But yes, back in the 00s, 90s, 80s, and earlier it wasn't uncommon to see the same kind of stuff in American comics as you did in manga, including sexualizing minor characters like Wonder Girl or X-23 who would be put in ecchi situations no different than you'd see in a typical shounen anime, or even variant covers of them in swimsuits like color spreads manga artists would draw on occasion.

Around the time superhero movie shared universes became a thing, comics started heavily toning down the sexual content in them, both for marketing reasons and changes in American social pressure. Nowadays you won't really find stuff like that anymore in mainstream books. The reason you might not see as many complaints is because it just doesn't really exist anymore. The few times it does pop up (usually variant covers by older artists who've been in the industry for decades) it does generate some controversy and complaints, though. Comics are a lot different than they were even a decade ago.

Why is this even newsworthy? The guy isn't a legitimate contender for the seat or anything. Might as well just be another crazy random guy on twitter.

I was only told only the “far left” wants anime destroyed or whatever.

After reading this, I’m a little confused...

Ten years ago, a New Hampshire congressman jumped the gun with a Facebook post eventually apologizing later for his jest "anime is a prime example of why two nukes just wasn't enough"
