I don't know who said it, but the best quote I've ever read was "No one screws up anime better than the Japanese."

Maybe a bit unfair, as the true screwing up falls to licensing and its idiotic cost tiers.

That reminds, has anyone figure out the title RightStuf is working on in which the original author is giving them a hard time getting the art work?

So I didn't pick up the Eva movie because I was waiting for a Blu-Ray release, but after hearing this, is it a hopeless mistake to wait? Should I just pick up the DVD and be happy?

Unless I'm mistaken, Funimation is supposed to be releasing the Blu-ray of Eva 1.01 in the Spring. God, it's going to be a long wait.

No, the Blu Ray will be of Eva 1.11, the Blu ray and dvd will be released in spring 2010.

Nope. There's really no way for us to guess... One of the newer licenses, maybe Antique Bakery?

That was what I was wondering while listening to the podcast. I know they mentioned Maria Watches... Season 4 awhile ago and haven't heard much about it since. And trolling around in their forums I thought they mentioned they were working on other title(s) too, but it seems like they wanted all their i's dotted and t's crossed before they would mentioned actual title names.

I'm getting a BluRay player soon, probably in January, but my problem with anime on BluRay is that, aside from a handful of Studio Ghibli films, most of the anime animated in high definition I want to buy on BluRay is probably too niche to release on BluRay in North America, like Kamichu! and Strawberry Marshmallow. Even with some of my absolute favourite theatrical anime movies like Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer and Project A-Ko I get the sneaking suspicion that, if I want them on BluRay, I'll have to import them from Japan whenever they get a BluRay release in Japan (especially considering the fact that both of those were CPM titles).

As for my obligatory "series Shawne should license" statement, it'll be Minami-ke, at least the first season from Studio Doumu. Also from that studio, I'm still hoping, perhaps in vain, that the Strawberry Marshmallow OVA's would get licensed.

Just commenting on Ponyo briefly...

I'm assuming that Justin and Zac don't have children. I don't mean that as an insult, just simply to say that Ponyo works if you have children and, well, might very well not if you don't. It isn't a movie that lets you see through a child's eyes; it requires those eyes. And unless you've got a child with you that you really love, it might not work. Seeing it with my 6-year-old was perhaps the best movie-going experience we've had together.

This also explains why the large majority of anime viewers in America weren't so big on it.

Oh, one other thing...Zac, you've always been a decent guy, but if PT Anderson is your favorite director, your cred just went through the roof. Very nice choice.

I personally liked Ponyo more than any film Miyazaki has made since Porco Rosso, but that's more because I was relatively lukewarm on Spirited Away, and, while I recognize the merits of Princess Mononoke, that sort of epic fantasy story isn't really my bag.

As good as Ponyo was, both Fantastic Mr. Fox and Up easily trounce it.

I must be doing something wrong, or looking in the wrong places, because I've checked that site before, and had seen nothing about the trade-in program. Ah well, time to go investigate again.

Thanks for the link - I'm feeling like a dork for being the only person unable to find that page.
Hmm, a $16 dollar fee though...I think I may as well just buy the re-mastered sets as presents and keep the old sets as well. Even though they're not mine, the collector in me can't bear to give up an out of print set.

Case in point: Emma. Just...Emma. Come on, it's set in VICTORIAN ENGLAND! THEY'RE NOT EVEN SPEAKING JAPANESE! Is it that much trouble to get some British VAs or even American or Canadian VAs who can do good fake British accents to dub it? Hell, look at Hellsing's dub--half the cast was limeys!

Well if you want to be SUPER accurate to the show you would have to get actors that not only had British accents but Victorian (Edwardian?) era British accents which are apparently very different from many modern day British accents. And seriously, I would imagine that it would be even harder to get foreign VAs for a niche show. So have fun with your subs!
You couldn't be more wrong mate. Have you ever seen a BBC period costume drama on your PBS? VAs don't care if a show is "niche", or not, they only care about how much they will get paid for it and there are plenty of actors who are willing to take whatever work comes their way if they aren't busy doing something else, and in this current economy there aren't too many of those right now. You'd be surprised how many great British actors and actresses are even doing Christmas pantomimes right now in small theatres, and end of piers for pittance. Also Brits love to travel. Wink

Great podcast, been listening since the first and I'm glad to see things are still going strong.
It was really nice to hear from the Rightstuf man himself. Man because of that store I've been able to collect so much anime. The Bargain Bin may not pay the bills but it has been a god-send to me.
When comapring last week's and this week's podcast I think it really shows that when a company does a good job of putting financials first you can still get great results with licensing anime, giving the anime fans what they want while still remaining afloat. Geneon really hit some bad times, maybe switching to sub-only releases might've saved them.
On the blu-ray thing. I'm planning to get a PS3 in the new year, but honestly in order to take advantage of that stuff you have to have one of those new tvs, and speaking as someone who hasn't gotten a new tv in almost seven years it'll be an expensive venture to upgrade both my tv and player. But I'm hoping it'll be worth it, especially with youtube planning to start doing 1080p broadcasts, people who have HDMI out on their computer can take advantage of all the great quality good. The home video market isn't necessarily showing me anything new for blu-ray that isn't on dvd and is cheaper. I mean unless it's an old show and it's been restored I don't really see the point of blu-ray for new shows, unless of course the animation is made of awesome.

Another great show this week guys. Been listening since the first episode and I have to say they keep getting better and better.

Just to chime in my opinion on a few of the topics.

I being a dub fan am somewhat disappointed that we are seeing less and less of them. Some shows are very much better with a dub. For example Black Lagoon(in my opinion) had a much better dub then sub. For a few reasons like Dutch actually sounding black and there were tons of errors corrected in the English as well as the fact that the performances were great.

That said there are also shows out there that should NEVER be dubbed. A perfect example of this is Maria Holic which was recently licensed. No VA could play Mariya as perfectly as the Japanese actress did. Mainly because most VA would make him sound to feminine on the main side or just to cheesy.

I love the shows that Nozomi releases. BoogiePop Phantom is easily one of my favorite shows ever. and Aria is also something I would really like to see however I am waiting until all the sets are out so I can just buy them all at once.(I would be kinda be interested in finding out how much I have spent at Rightstuf.)

As for boxes. I love good art boxes. Not all of them are done well but when they are they are incredible. Sure they may take up alot more room but it's worth it in my opinion. I LOVE the original Hell Girl box and the incredibly boxes for Gurren Lagann and the First Code Geass box were insanely well made and beautiful to have on the shelf. No all are like that but when they are it's more then worth it. I even liked seeing some of the more unique boxes back in the day like the BECK amp box or the R.O.D the TV Book set(Which I own and love)

A lot of people have been saying this and I very much disagree that it can't/shouldn't be done. If I'm reading this correctly, Strawberry Eggs had Crispin Freeman do the male lines and Sally Dana do the chick lines. I've never seen that, so I don't know how it turned out (it has Crispin, it can't be bad),but it's been done. Also, a show I have seen, Vandread had spoiler[Crispin do the male B.C. and Weedee Lee do the female] and that worked out great. I'm sure there are others and I just don't know about them.

My Point: Just because the Japanese used one voice actress due to little Japanese boys sounding like females, doesn't mean there isn't a way to do it in English. I would've loved Maria Holic to have a dub, it would've been so fun Very Happy
