As someone from a non-ring wearing family background, I was not surprised that in the comment section everyone was asking about the ring because people asked my married family members so much about rings. For the illustrators, the ring-exchange scene probably didn't register with them at all (they may not have seen the show but I don't know), but for many in the audience, perhaps largely Western in orientation but exceptions are lots, the scene was incredibly important.

This is quite interesting on a few different levels.

If they went so far as to change it, you can bet they got a lot of feedback from Japanese audiences about it. It's not the first time this happens either. There's an infamous incident regarding the poster that was included in one of the official guidebooks from 2017, where Yuuri's ring should have been visible, but there was no ring to be found in the previews and the fans bombarded the publisher and the artist. The artist then explained that she had originally included the ring but was asked by the publisher to remove it, which, as can be imagined, caused even bigger outrage, to the point the ring was added by the time the book went to print. With that precedent, it's no surprise fans have become hyper-vigilant about this issue.

Thanks for the context. Wow! What?! Did the publisher ever say their "reasoning"?
