Don't necessarily disagree with anything said in the review, but I think I give it more of a pass because it was early in Oshimi's career. He was learning his craft and getting better at nuance and character building. This is a foundational piece and an interesting look at his early growth.
My only disappointment was the open-ended conclusion, especially in the relationship between Yumeko and her "model."

That line of thinking is honestly pretty offensive and toxic. Not all odd behavior is the result of mental or neurological disorder, nor is everyone with a mental or neurological disorder oddly behaved.
Also, accepting/normalizing behavior you would otherwise consider unacceptable simply, and only, because someone has such a disorder is neither helpful nor desirable to that person. Unless they are truly low functioning, they have the need and right of being responsible for their action, and anything less is dehumanizing.
Accept and judge a person for who they are, and don't rely on some label to tell you whether you're right or wrong to do so. Having a disorder does not make creepy offensive behavior ok, nor should your first though when someone acts odd be to think of such disorders. It's a very unhealthy association to make.

That left a bad taste in my mouth too. I myself am “on some sort of spectrum” and I’ve never behaved anything like how Yumeko is described in this review. I’m sure the reviewer didn’t mean any harm by it, but it’s a line of thinking that can be harmful.

I also agree. It’s a strange mindset to me: accept inappropriate behavior only if someone has a disorder or condition. If she’s on the spectrum then Yumeko’s behavior is possibly understandable, but she’s not so it’s just straight up uncomfortable. Why? Under the assumption that her fascination and treatment on others is something she “can’t help” cause she’s “not like everyone else”? If it makes you uncomfortable, you shouldn’t have to tolerate it whether she’s neurodivergent or not.

This sounds like a bonkers premise that COULD'VE been really interesting to explore but it comes across as more mean-spirited or damaging than it's (hopefully) intended to be. Hard pass for me.
