It’s a curio to show it could, a piece of technological art, if you will. I don’t think the Consumer Product Safety Commission is going to let that go to market.

Admittedly this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of tech designed to give painful feedback to games, but this is the first to actually kill you.

Well, considering he "chose" the explosive charges and not just old good electric zap through the headset is already fun enough. Actual NerveGear was supposed to be used even after the emitter is deactivated (even if that means the death of the user) and not just blow up with him, Luckey needs to improve on that part Very Happy

Do they actually say that in SAO? I remember seeing it credited to some early-00s horror movie.

To be honest, if the part of the VR set that kills you were able to do it painlessly (and without mess), I could see it being developed into an acceptable form of assisted suicide.

My guess is this is one of the reasons he went with the charges. I assume he wanted it to be more extreme to discourage any actual death usage.

With Euthanasia legal in some places and even Suicide Pods about to become a thing, Palmer at least has an entertaining way to go.

Well, maybe in Canada they might.

I seem to remember that the similar quote "If you die in the game, you die for real" is credited to the 2006 film Stay Alive.
And yes, Kirito does say "If I die in the game, I'll die in real life" in the first episode.

Palmer Lucky is an awful person but I feel reasonably certain this is a scam and that VR technology is not that advanced yet and they would never allow such a thing to be made if it was and certainly not a mass marketed product. The article itself even notes the system isn't full proof and the game over screen can be overridden. This is just screams total scam and SAO is just a cartoon and not real life.

Another bad "joke" from Palmer Luckey. Not even a new low-point. Razz

It's also pretty similar to one or more lines in The Matrix (1999)...
