well I wouldn't say calibur is the weakest of the arcs but it was definitely entertaining. until they added another girl into kazuto's "pseudo harem" even though he's already taken though personally he should have been with lefa (don't matter or care if she's his sister/cousin) or better yet sachi by not bumping her off since he's the first girl he actually cared for before asuna.

I remember this mini-arc being a lot more fun than the last part of the GGO arc. Sinon gets to be a badass with her bow and the best girl of the series (Asuna has become such a boring character), and we watch Klein being very fun. Kirito is awesome again, so that feels boring. By the end of the arc, I wanted Sinon to get the sword instead of Kirito, although that would've been useless, but she deserves it more than our Gary Stu main character.

Anyway, it was a very good piece of entertainment after the GGO arc. Actually, this would've fit as a mini arc after a recap movie of SAO II, just like that "let's find the whales" adventure that we see in the Extra Edition movie.

Actually, in the original broadcast there was a recap episode focused on the GGO arc right before this arc. Forgot to mention that Aniplex's release skips over it.

Yeah, I just checked and you are totally right. I just forgot about it because I never sit to watch it.

Since that episode was included in the fifth Japanese Blu-ray/DVD volume of the second season, Aniplex of America included it on their second volume.

This arc is pretty much Leafa and Klein's chance to shine.

Leafa is much of the driving force of the quest. She's the one bringing the news to Kirito about the new quest, it's her concern for Tonkii and his friends that provides the immediate urgency to complete the Excaliber quest(as opposed to the vague concerns about the ramifications of the extermination quest succeeding). She's the one to figure out the myth the quest is based on, and what they need to do to get the key item to deal with the boss.

Meanwhile Klein gets to contradict Kirito, and have his decision be the right one that allows them to clear the quest. He's also the only one that gets more than just the generic reward.
