Crowdfund Hopes to Turn NEET Manga Character Into Virtual Idol
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
A crowdfund campaign launched on Sunday in hopes of transforming manga character Neeko from Aldehyde's Neko wa Tsurai yo series into a 3D "NEET" YouTube idol and produce an original song.
The "NEET idolization" project hopes to raise 3 million yen (US$27,000) to produce a 3D idol version of Neeko and her song. The campaign is offering rewards for certain donation tiers including can badges, stickers, postcards, a copy of the song on CD, event tickets, signed artwork, appearance in the video, and voicing a character.
Neeko is already a virtual YouTuber and her channel has 16,500 subscribers. Aldehyde's manga launched in 2017 and is published online on the BookWalker site. The comedy manga follows a 23-year-old unemployed woman named Nemuko Niito who hates working. Her last name "Niito" is a homophone for "NEET," an acronym used to describe someone who is "not in education, employment, or training."
Kadokawa released the second volume of the manga in October.
