EDIT: Apparently I missed something important, but I like the numerical coincidence too much to delete it.
That depends on your province. Assuming you've already converted into Canadian dollars, the 15% rate plus Canada Post's fee comes to $23.825(apropos of nothing, my state's sales tax rate is 8.25%). Last edited by Polycell on Sat Sep 29, 2012 12:53 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Seriously? You can't use a calculator? I mean, I'm more than happy to help a guy out with information about how this all works but you're bordering on annoyingly lazy now. We already told you everything you need to know to figure this out: You pay the $10 handling fee plus whatever percentage the tax rate is in your province (13% for hst) times the value of the items. So that's $10 + 13% of $92.50. Do the math. |

Well if you're really convinced it's cheaper, go ahead and buy off Amazon

It's the same here in Quebec, 15%. |

Man that is rough. Sales tax in Virginia is only 5%. We pay the seller but only if they are present in Virginia. Of course we have a state income tax so it probably evens out.
That $10 handling charge, do you pay it on all packages or only on the ones from outside your country? Our postoffice charges all fees to the shipper. They do not collect sales tax at all. |

Basically, every time they intercept a commercial package at the Canadian Border Services Agency, they systematically open it to see : 1- if someone is trying to import prohibited stuff in Canada. 2- how much sales taxes they have to charge on delivery in order to make up for the fact that we did not make this purchase in Canada. Then they put everything back in the box, seal it, post a bill on the box, and then send it our way. This process is costing us 10$ per package opened, which we have to pay on delivery, along with the sales taxes (15%). |

Nope. We Canadians pay provincial tax, too. Hey, we gotta pay for our socialist paradise somehow, right??? |

But, but, ... We have to be paying more taxes than you. Lately I've been getting 5 or 6 recorded phone calls each day telling me that us Americans are grossly over taxed. And then there are the ads on TV and the newspaper saying the same thing. I mean, they couldn't be saying it if it wasn't true.

Ah, that's because we are. They said someone that makes 50 grand a year will be taxed more then someone that makes millions. Not sure how someone that gets paid less gets taxed more. |

Vata Raven--
*sigh* You need to take a statistics course. You are confusing percentages with absolute numbers (e.g., rather famously, Warren Buffet remarked that his secretary is in a higher tax bracket than he is). Also, I think that Alan45's last sentence is facetious. |

You got me. It is true about the phone calls though. I'm getting real tired of being in a "battleground state". Watching the evening news subjects you to a dozen or more political ads in just an hour. Truth is taking a real beating. The TV station is doing fine though. |

@Alan45
Just out of curiosity here, do Americans really think they're overtaxed? |

More like unfairly taxed. Like I said, middle class people seem to get taxed more. While people that can afford a trip to France without worrying about cost, they don't pay much in tax. People will forever complain about why the rich don't get taxed more. Middle class is always what supported US, and there are a lot of stories were the rich won't pay taxes. I think there is someone with so much buildup on tax that they can pay off most of the US debt. |

Well that I can certainly understand. Here in Canada, most people pay an income tax rate of 30%. But once your annual income before taxes goes upwards of $150K a year, the tax rate becomes 51%. I always thought the US had a similar policy of the more you make, the more in taxes you pay. |
