Wow, that's very good for a anime that had limited release. But then again, it's from Studio Ghibli so that is expected.

mdo: If the ads didn't emphasize the cast and the barely there Miyazaki connection, it probably would've done worse.

I'm just praying that they expand the theaters showing this enough so i can go see it. We don't get this kind of thing where I live but we do in nearby cities. And considering the theaters in those cities showed Arrietty and Ponyo I don't see why they won't show this movie.

yotsuba: Because Arrietty and Ponyo were distributed by Disney and had broader U.S. family appeal?

So is the film considered a financial success now?

Marshal: If it makes more than the rest of its $20 million deficit back, then sure.

Studio Ghibli is famous worldwide (regardless if Miyazaki had done or not done the film), and this movie had limited commercial airtime so I don't think it would've done worse. |

I don't know about the rest of the world, but Takahata isn't famous here.
Oh, it definitely could have done worse. |

I don't know what this "barely there Miyazaki connection" is you're referring to, but I think it being a Ghibli film still lent quite a bit to its success due to that little incident we had earlier this year. A lot of people are still confused about the studio's future and even think that this is actually their last film. I've noticed that a lot of "huge fans" can't even stay up to date with what's going on in Japan. If they did then they'd know that we were getting at least one more after this. But Takahata is such a great filmmaker, I hope this film continues to get a lot of good advertising and word of mouth. |

He's not, but Studio Ghibli is famous worldwide, I think a lot of non-anime fans would know what it is.
Arriety wasn't directed by Miyazaki and it still made a lot of money. Again, because it has Studio Ghibli's name on there, it'll get a lot of attention and profit. I've seen anime which has been advertised a lot but failed at the box office (I can't remember the name, but advertising and commercial doesn't always mean big profit in return). Also I agreed with Jayhosh on what he said. |

Yeah, a 2 hour and 17 minute watercolor animated film about some obscure (to the West) fairy tale isn't about to make a splash. Even arthouse fans don't really seem to give Ghibli the time of day beyond Miyazaki, to them Ghibli and Miyazaki are synonyms.

'From the studio behind Spirited Away and Totoro'? mdo:
I'm not talking about Arrietty. Though I'm sure Ghibli would be pleased if Kaguya made that kind of money overseas. |

I saw it at the Phila film fest and the theater for the showing was pretty full.
I am sure besides being Studio Ghibli it doesn't hurt that it's got very high critical ratings. Actually it was kind of funny leaving the theater hearing a wife and a husband talking about the film the wife was like wow that was beautiful and the husband was like that was awful it had no story. |
